Starting in May on Lake Scugog,-the unit began by studying fish popula- tions for seven weeks using trapnets which allowed re- lease of fish unharmed. Catches of fish from the lake were so heavy that no more than six locations could be fîshed at any one time. Total catch for this period was over 11,000 fish with the most numerous species in the catch being 4,800 yellow pickerel. Catches in descending numer- ical order after pickerel were pumpkinseed, bullhead, rock- bass, largemouth bass, small mouth bass, carp, mask- inonge, perch and common white suckers. Catches from Lake Scugog have been excel- lent and all species appear in bealthy condition. Also starting in May, a creel census program was initiated on Sturgeon Lake and Lake Scugog; this has continued through the summer and will be continued into the faîl. Success in May and dune for av both'lakes was excellent but Ir tapered off to slightly better than a typical August, with a lower angler success. Better days are in sight.for the faîl, however, when the angler success rate is expected to increase significantly. During July and August fisb samples for contaminant analysis bave been obtained from Rice, Pigeon, Sturgeon, Sdugog and Balsam Lakes. Fisb species collected were pickerel, perch and large- mouth bass. Samples have been forwarded ta Ministry of Environment labs for analy- sis.
