TENNIS - Nancy Jackman of Bowmanville, playing for the Durham College Tennis team, has won the Eastern Region, Women's Single Championship, and will represent Durham College at the Provincial championships, on Friday and Saturday, October 14th and l5th in Ottawa. BASEBALL - yes, that's right. Confusing isn't it. After a delay of six weeks, the Courtice Juvenile "Henry Buildaîl" team finally met Ajax at Courtice on Monday, in a best of five series. COMPETING- in the annual Peterborough five mile road race on Saturday, October 8th were Lee Taylor, who won the bantam girls bronze medal for the, third year in a row. Steve Taylor won the boys bronze medal, the father and son trophy was won by Steve and Dave Taylor of Hampton. Also competing were Russ and Sophie Gibson and son Jessie. CONVENTION - about 500 members of the Canadian Racing Pigeon Union from across Canada met last weekend at the InnOn The Park, Toronto, for their annual convention and bird auction, About 150 bidders paid out about $1800. Most of the 125 birds, ail bludbloods of the aviary, are veterans of, the Bowmanville Classic - the Queen's Plate of the racing pigeon world, held September 25. Owners who entered their best stock in the Bowmanville Classic, the biggest race ever held in Canada, paid $50 to enter each bird. Grand prize for the race was $5,000 out of a total $18,000 prize money. The 4-month-old birds, trained to return to the loft built by Harold Price who ~spnsred the raîce, flew 48317km (300 miles) fromi Raymrear' Ki;,rkand Lake to B-owmýYanvilîe, at~ an average of 80 kmi-h (50 rmph). Eagles looked impressive with a 7 to 4 win tallyîng up 19 of a possible 21 points on fine team work. The present edition- of Eagles have a bard act to follow after iast season's trip to the fi nals. The team, suited out in new whi te, red and black uniforms, showed every good execution, speed, mobility on defence, fore- checking aggressivly, back- checkîng well and generally playing sound basic positional hockey, at times showing mîd season form. The game started officially with sponsor Irv Gi dropping the first puck. Eagles carried the play to Muskies from the opening faceoff, scoring only one goal on the bard pressed Little in- net for Muskies. Steve Dunn raced in from bis point position, firing the loose puck behind the startled goaler, assisted by Gary Cox and Brian Simpson. Simpson counted Fagles third goal, receiving a point pass from the little smoothy centre Don Farrow, Ted Puck also assist- ed digging bard for the puck. Right Winger Kirk Kemp cashed in on the forechecking of Farrow for Eagles' fourth goal, a -low bard drive. Lindsay's first goal came with four minutes left in period. Eagles scored a shorthanded goal late in the period, Dunn scoring after receivîng a pass from Kemp, Farrow also assisting. Kemp started Eagles third period scoring a low siot drive set up by Farrow, Kim Rassmussen also assisting. Gary Cox, vetran fleet footed right Winger for the Port Darlington crew, finished the home side scoring setup by Ted Puk who raced up ice laying a perfect pass. Muskies, turned in a late third period rally enjoying a 5 on 4 advantage giving Eagle goaler Bob Koczulab a bard time after playing a steady game. There were 380 fans on hand for the first game, a good turnout for a holiday weekend. ,The team put together by Coach Bill Cosburn and bis bard working officials made up mostly of graduates of the very fine Bowmanville Mînor Hockey Association the fans can look forward to a very entertaining season.
