And according to information received there will be quite an array of talent featured with a hockey game, figure skating displays and lots of humor. FLASHBACK - 10 YEARS AGO - Johanne Bennett and Merridy Hately will represent Bowmanville on the Zone J bowling team at April Lanes in Scarborough on November l9th. BASEBALL - on Thursday, October 27th at the Elmhurst Hotel, Newcastle, an executive for the first men's basebal league, formed in Newcastle, in years, was chosen. Bruce Aldred is the moving force behind this venture and already has three or four sponsors lined up. Aldred would also like to see players working out before Christmas and has arranged for space at Pine Ridge Training School Gym to work out a couple of times a week. SUNDAY - November 13th at 2 p.m. is the date of the official opening of the new Durham College Athletic and Activities Building. Special displays, exhibition games etc. are planned. Better plan to attend. It is really some- thing. MORE - Ontario Minor Hockey rules. Rule 30C - In situations where the coincident major penalty rule applies and the players also receive coincident game misconducts, the penalized players shall be ordered to the dressing room. It will NOT be necessary to put a substitute in the box. Rule 40R - Al match penalties must be reported by 'phone to your group convenor within 24 hours and a written report on the same mailed within 24 hours. Written reports should be in triplicate, one to the Association and one for each referee. Rule 46B - Where a team official is assessed a game misconduct under 46A the referee shall report in full detail to the President through the group convenor for further action. Rule 46G - A minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct shall be assessed any player or team official who challenges or disputes a referee's ruling during a game or displays bad temper by banging his stick on the boards or ice, etc. Note 1 - This shall apply where the offence is not serious enough to deserve 10 minutes. Note 2 - This should not be applied where sticks are banged on the boards or ice in celebration of a goal, etc. HUNTING - There will be a three day shotgun season with no dogs allowed on November 7 - 8 - 9 in the Townships of Asphodel (south of High- way 7), Otonabee (south of Highway 7, North Monaghan, South Monaghan, Cavan, Man- vers, Scugog, Mariposa and the Town of New- castile. Commercial Hockey League J Firths 7 Spencers 1 The meat machine showed they could score goals in the early games as well as the late ones, counting 5 in the first period of the day. Joe Burns started the barrage with Bob Howes drawing the assist. For the next 3 minutes the referee dropped the puck at centre and then picked it out of Spencers goal 3 times in a row. Bob MeLaughlin scored from Steve Hogarth, Bob Howes then tallied with Bob Mc- Laughlin assisting and then scoring the next goal from Sandy Brown and Joe Humen- ick. Kerry Milner added another on a solo effort to end the period. Kerry again started the second period off with another goal in the first minute and a half, Joe Burns assisting. Joe Humenick made it 7-0 at the 6 minute mark with Bob Howes and Bob McLaughlin drawing assists. Spencers then got on the board with Pete Nowlan scoring on assists by Earl Cobbledick and Jim Baker. The third period was fast, furious, scoreless hockey. Franks 10 D&R 2 In the second match, Franks bombarded D&R. Boyd Knox lead the way with 5 goals and obviously played a whale of a game. Brian Hughes had a hat trick, with singles going to AI Junkin and Jim Burtch. Rory Gibbs proved to be the playmaker counting 4 assists, AI Junkîn had 3, Jim Burtch and JohnTaylor had 2 each with J. Rekker picking up a. single. D&R scored once in the second and once in the third. Murray O'Brien tallied late in the second with Steve Parker and Larry Perris assisting. John Hughes added another in the third, Steve Parker and Steve Sumersford assisting. Cowans 7 Hoopers 5 Good, fast hockey ended the day with Rick Woolner finding the empty net to give Cowans a 2 goal lead at 19:40 of the third. Newly acquired Paul Forsey started Hoopers off midway through the first, on assist by John Colwell and Mike Heuer. Scott Burgess Bowmanville Driver Wins Formula Ford Championship Youth Bowling Don Yourth, of R.R. 6, Bowmanville, had a good year in the Ontario Region Formula Ford racing car competition. Yourth finished the season in first place, picking up a good selection of trophies and plaques along the way. In the final event of the 12-race season, he snatched first place at the Nelson International Speedway near Shannonville, Ontario. M~~r~nnr ninr A #~ e EEnte %Wu yga During Y On Saturday afternoon, the Bowmanville McGregor Hard- ware Major Atom Toros defeated the Oshawa "AAA' Minor Atoms 4-2 in an O.M.H.A. League game at the Bowmanville Memorial Arena. Oshawa struck for the first goal in the opening period, with Bowmanville's Greg Watson evening things up two minutes later. Assists on the play went to his linemates Chris Dreossi and Tom Mc- Laughlin. There was no more scoring until the third period when Lorne Whitmarsh sent Bow manville into the lead. The assist on the goal went to Watson. McLaughlin scored the third McGregor Hardware goal, the assist going to Whitmarsh. Bowmanville's last goal came off the stick of defenceman Brian Heard who Veekend Actio made a solo rush the length of the ice. Oshawa scored a goal late in the game. Goaltending duties for the game were handled by Chris Clifton., The Bowmanville Major Atomns, sponsored by Mc- Gregor Hardware, eked out a couple of wins on the weekend by the closest of margins. On Friday evening, the Toros travelled to Port Hope and managed to squeeze out a close 2-1 decision over a very determined Port Hope squad. The Hilltowners jumped into a 1-0 lead early in the opening period. The Toros couldn't find the range until the third stanza when Brad Cruess finally scored with the assist on the goal going to his right winger Paul Robichaud. Robichaud scored the game winner at the 8:00 mark, assisted by de- fenceman Jeff Knox and Jon Clieff. Chris Clifton handled the goaltending duties and was called upon to make several difficult stops. On Saturday in the Memor- îal Arena, Bowmanville,the Toros hosted Peterborough and again edged the visitors 1-0. The Toros scored at the 4:54 mark of the opening period on a goal by Chris Lee, the assists going to defenceman Pierre St. Amand and Paul Robich- aud. This goal eventually became the game winner. Goaltending was ably looked after by Allan Ulrich who was funl value for the shutout. On Wednesday, the McGreg- or Hardware squad travels to Bay Ridges for its first real test of the season and the lads will have to greatly improve their style of play to pull out a win against this, powerful team. Clippers won what could be described as the first round of tied the score soon after, Robert Ormiston assisting. Ormiston then put Cowans ahead withtSteve Burnsand Bruce Osbourne assisting. Steve Burns scored on the first shif t of the second period. Robert Ormiston and Scott Burgess assisting. Dave Ormiston pulled Hoopers to within one goal converting a Rick Shackleton pass into a goal. Paul Forsey then tied the game on a solo rush, Mike Heuer assisting. Mike Cornell and Randy Donoghue teamed up to put Cowans ahead by i but Paul Forsey tallied his third goal to end the second period with a deadlock. In the third Tom Nowlan again put Cowans ahead, Robert Ormiston assisting. Stu Herod lengthened the lead, Scott Burgess and Rick Wool- ner helping out. Joe Caruana then scored on a bustering drive assisted by Dave Ormis- ton to pull Hoopers to within- one goal. They had the pressure on in the last 2 minutes, until Rick Woolner broke loose onathe empty net to put Cowans again ahead by 2. a possible battle for first and second place in the Central Ontario division as these teams are picked as the teams to beat.Stouffville won by a 6 to 2 count to hold goaler Rick Marshmans record of 20 goals against intact. Eagles had two new players dressed for this game which could have had a bearing on the outéome as it takes time to form combinations. Eagles had excellent first period scoring opportunities but were unable to put the puck behind Marshman. Danny Wilcox in net for the Marina crew played a very strong game, making the initial save to perfection but leaving several rebounds that his defenders dd not clear. Eagle wingers were caught up ice and making the cardinal sn of stick checking Clippers for the first two periods then taking the man out in the third which was Eagles' best period by far. Clippers opened the scoring with two first period goals, Quinn from Brown and Kirk- land, time 10:27, then a power play goal Letch from Jones and Roy 18.47. Clippers with a big second period outscoring Eagles 4 to 1 Newcomer to Eagles John Conboy scored at the 2:54 mark to put Eagles on the score board assisted by felow newcomer Steve Baker and veteran Ted Puk. Clippers exploded for four goals, Jones from Letch 6:00 then the backbreaker Taylor from Assinck and Schell 6:52. Clippers next goal at 15:49' Brown from Jones, immedi- ately after Eagles Jerry Johnson has been tripped breaking up ice with no penalty called. Clippers' sixth goal 17:01 Taylor from Schell. Centre John Conboy scored at the 41 second mark of the third period. Eagles playing two men short, Conboy beat one of the fastest players inthe league Perry Brown for his goal, stealing the puck from Brown then scoring on a close in shot. Van Dyk Midgets Stii Undefeated Van Dyk Real Estate Major Midgets ran into a tough checking Port Hope squad on Oct. 19 and settled for a 2-2 tie. After a scoreless first, Jim Hogarth opened the scoring on a play set up by John Stewart and Stan Greenham. Port Hope tied the count before the second frame ended and jumped into the lead early in the third. Hogarth's second of the night evened the notch late in the third. Assists went to Scott Sellers and Mark Lux- ton. On Thursday, Oct. 21, the Toros travelled to Markham and rallied for a 3-3 tie. Once again the first period was scoreless with Van Dyks Hugh Brunt scoring first in the second. Wayde Preston and Paul Cascagnette assisted. Markham roared back with three straights to set the stage for the comback. Brent Clem- ens was set up by Mark Luxton to draw within one. Persistant forechecking paid off on the equalizer as Greg Brunt picked up a loose puck deep in the Markham zone and made no mistake. Lindsay came to Hampton last Wednesday only to be humiliated 14-2 Van Dyks completely dominated the game in every aspect. The Toros scored 5 in the first, 4 in the second and 5 in the third. Greg Brent was the sharp shooter bulging the twine 4 times. Paul Ried and Wayde Preston had a pair while single markers went to Brent Clemens, Mark Luxton, Bill Wright, Murray Ruddy, Jim Hogarth and Dean Holmes. Van Dyk Real Estate majors were in action Satur- day in an exhibition encounter against Newmarket at Hamp- ton. The game was part of the Level 4 Referees Clinic. Lt was a hard hitting fast skating game which had the Toros chalk up a 2-1 victory. Newmarket drew first blood in the first. Two third period markers earned the Realtors the win. Greg Brunt evened the notch as Wayde Preston assisted. Dean Holmes fed a pass to Jim Hogarth who swooped in from the left side to beat the Newmarket goalie for' the tie breaker. Kevin Gibson and Mark Doyle split the netminding chores and turned in some outstanding goaltending. McGregor Drugs Defeat Stouffville Playing in Darlington Sports Centre on Saturday, Oct. 30 McGregor I.D.A. Drugs boys put it all together and defeated an undefeated team from Stouffville by 6-2. This was a big win for our team as Stouffville had put it to us the last game by the score of 9-0. Opening the scoring for Bowmanville was Mike D' Entrement assisted by Ryan Kearney. Stouffville tied the score to end the first period at 1-1. Just one minute went by in the second when the visitors took the lead and looked as if they were about to take command of the game. But our Toros kept skating hard and came up with the tying goal at the half way mark of the second on a hard shot from the point by Grant Brock, on a good setup from Allen Potter and Ryan Kearney. With 4 minutes left in the second, Ryan Kearney scored on a deflection from Grant Brock's shot from the point with Mike D'Entrement giving "Brock- ie" the pass. With just 53 seconds left in the second and McGregor Drugs playing short-handed, Ryan Kearney broke up a play at their blue line and moved in quickly, putting a good fake on their netminder to score unassisted. This ended the scoring in the second at Toros 4, Stouffville 2. Toros came out with deter- mination to win in the third and with just 40 seconds gone, Grant Brock fired a hard slap shot to score assisted by Brad Clemens. The remainder of the third was quite chippy hockey as Stouffville were not used of the close checking of our Bowmanville boys. With only 48 seconds remaining Brian Strong scored, assisted by Brad Clemens and Gary Allen. Playing a strong game for Toros was Ryan Kearney and also playing well and going al the way in our nets was Paul Adams. On last Tuesday evening our McGregor I.D.A. Drugs played an exhibition game against Newcastle Major Ban tams, coming out on the short end of the scoring at 8-3. Newcastle scored 4 goals Ïi the first with Ryan Kearney scoring Toros only goal assist- ed by John Foote and Graiit Brock. Dan McMullen scored in the second assisted by Brad Clemens and Brian Strong.
