Renovations Completed Section Two The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville, November 30, 1977 Hospital -In Top Shape> Affer :25O,000 Surgery Renovated work station in the recovery room. By Shawn Marshall Memorial Hospital has just completed a $250,000 face-lift on itself that flot oniy makes it more efficient, but also adds a touch of >class1 to the whole operation., The one-quarter of a million dollars spent on renovations was a sufficient sum to cover new equipment needed in the operating and recovery rooms and the work that was needed on dietary and preparation areas in the hospital. When the amount has to buy equipment as technical as a cardioscope and difribulator or an isolated circuitry system, however, $250,000 is spent without using much imagination. The work began while the third floor was phased out under Ministry of Health's, cutbackiran hospit.al spending. *Renovated operating rooms with, and difribulator, isolated circuitry new operating table, carclioscope and gas system. Dietary area renovations with new stainless and ligting, jet presuire cocke mmdvenilation steel salad-sandwich preparation bar, new ceiing system. The renovations were car- ried out smoothly except for two to four weeks delays in the delivery of new equipment. The two operating rooms were out of order for six weeks as the construction crew worked at installing the iso- lated circuitry, a system that will set off an alarm should any electrical shortage occur. New operating tables and a gas input system have been added in the surgery area. In addition to the work gtation that has been reno- vated in'the recovery room, the gas system extends to that room as well. The gas system gives a surgeon access to a direct outlet for oxygen, nitrus oxide or a suction system that has been hooked into the ceiling thrnugh tubes that lead from a bulk storage area. Thé oxygen system was recently rated as on the best in the province. Air-conditioning and special humidifiers plus other new equipment units have been put into the, operating areas as well. Improvements were made in the scrub area with the addition of a stainless steel sink complete with timers to indicate how long someone has been washing up to prepare to enter the surgery area. After coping with a kitchen - that was temporarily set up in the storage departmenf, the dietary staff are back in their pervious location. With new specially treated flooring, a ventilation system, new lighting installed in the ceil- ing, a jet pressure cooker and a stainless steel salad sand- wich preparation area, how- ever, the kitchen is barely recognizable. A charting area for nurses has also been remodelled as part of the hospital's oper- ating floor. Hlospital administrator Dick, Elston described most of the additions and renovations that were made as minor items. When Department of Health inspectors recommended areas of improvement for the hospital last year, the prol- posal was discussed by the board and soon approved. The upgrading work makes the hospital one of the myost efficient of its scale presently in operation in Ontario.
