Weeds Grow At Historic Location The Provincial Ministry of Culture and Recreation stated last week that it was disturbed to learn about the aondition of an historic site west of Newcastle village. "As every historical plaque attracts, among others, many tourists each year, we are naturally most concerned over the Newcastle Fish Hatchery plaque site, said David Roberts, in a letter to the Town. Mr. Roberts is an historian with the Ministry of Culture and Recreation. His letter has been referred to the town's public works committee for further action. The Newcastle Fish Hatchery was enlarged in 1868 into Ontario's first full-scale fish hatchery and was one of the earliest hatcheries in North America. It was origin- ally built in 1866 by Samuel Wilmot in an attempt to restore Ontario's declîning salmon population. By 1876, 1.5 million eggs were hatched at the Newcastle site and Samuel Wilmot was supervising, similar facilities in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes. Bowmanville Hospital's Women's Auxiliary raised $900 for, the hospital last Friday at their a 'nnual Christmas bazaar. Hospital staff con- verged in the main foyer to buy cooking and crafts that were contributed for the event.
