Saint Nick dropped wishes to t he North Pole visitor. b- q ?&eutrtnb ~tr3nt One Sunday morning I was accosted at the church door by a rather dignified but rather out- spoken gentleman who said, "By gum, that was a dandy sermon today and if anyone says anything to you by way of criticism you tell them that if the hat fits wear it. " This little incident speaks to us of the great value of criticism. Most- people today are acquainted- with criti- cism, and those in public life are especially well acquainted with it. But criticism, if accept- ed with a measure of maturity, a grain of understanding,' and a dash of humour can be of great service to us. twien "a great manand ,a small man (or wo)man) is often determined by how they react to criti- cism. The little man rejects criticism and, will react to it with feelings of anger and animosity. The big man will quietly accept it and search out its source and content to see if there is some way he can improve himself and what hie is trying to do. Dr. Albert Cook, the famous missionary to Uganda was one who learned his lesson well in thi s regard. 11e had written an article for a medical journal and he awaited anxiously, for the issue to arrive from England. When it finally came he ripped off the cover wondering if anyone had commented, on the article he had presented for the treat- ment of malaria. H1e had seen what malaria could do to a whole village. H1e had seen its terrible tol taken out on people, and heý had even experi- enced the crippling disease in bis own body. Because of his personal experience with it, he had worked extremely hard on his article even to the point of drawing sketches of the malaria parasite. As he opened the journal his eye feIl upon a letter by a famous research scientist commenting on bis article. The letter was very critical even to the point of saying that "this missionary who calîs himself a doctor" had illustrated the article with sketches of parasites that weren't malaria parasites at ail. Hurt by the criticismn, Cook dropped the journal' and paced about the room seething Dowmanvle Pentecostal Church 75 Liberty Street South 9:-55 a.m. Sunday School 11: 00 a.m. Morning Service 7:-00 p.m. The Lighthouse Singers aptiýost Church Now at our new buildingý on the -3rd Concession i ust west of Li berty Street 1.75 miles north of Highway No. 2. Who did that critie think hie was, sitting in his luxurious office in the centre of civilization in London, writing his critique of a man who had exper- ienced malaria first hand?- Angry words formed in his mind to address to his critic. Then as lie calmed down hie thought about it, and hie decided to examine the parasites again. As lie restudied them under his old brass microscope, lie dis- covered that his critic in London was right. These were not malaria para- sites. But what were they? He worked tire- lessly until hie discover- ed they were the ones responsible for relaps- ing fever. H1e also learn- ed they were spreacl by ticks. " This discovery estab- lished himas a world- famous research scien- tist and in 1932 King George V summoned, him to London and knighted him Sir Albert Cook. Sometimes criticism can be lacking in mercy and charity. It may hurt us to the very core of our beings, but if we can move on past the hurt and anger it produces, to search out any con- structive value it may contain, then it becomes not an enemy but a friend and we grow in character because of it. Local Points to Ponder If municipalities like Bancroft, Madoc, Pic- ton and Belleville can have an abundance of accommodation for Seniors what is wrong here in Bowmanville? One of our concerned citizens, John Rice,, has been trying for years to build a residence for Seniors. Each time he overcomes a restictive regulation another one is -put in his path. Who is trying to block his proposed development and why? With the abundance of snow evident every- where this rmay be a good year for local council to dko something about the inefficient methods of snow- removal. Or should we say non-removal? At the same time they may reconsider their adver- tised intent to charge everyone who does not clear their sidewalks within 12 hours of a storm., Our courts are HeIp Keep your New Year's Reso lut ions with SMOKER SPECIAL ONE STEP AT A TIME A 4-step 8-week smoking wifhdrawal system f rom Water Pik WEIGHT WATCHERS SPECIAL I.D.A.
