Mitchell's Corners Home and School Association's 20th Anniversary is January 29, 1978. All past executive and members will be given a special invitation to attend Mitchell's Corners Public Schol's, Home and School meeting this Monday, Jan. 23rd at 7:15 at the school. We will be reviewing our past 20 years as an association through typed highlights. Jan. 23 - 29 is Nutrition Week in Ontario. As a special event for this week Carole Milligan, Nutritionist with the Durham Regional Health Unit will speak on nutrition for the student in a fast moving society. A film will be shown. Nutrition - What's to Eat? If I told you that in Canada this year we could save $2 billion in health care costs by following Canada's Food Guide, would you believe me? If you said yes, you're right! Poor nutrition - yes, mal- nutrition - in Canada is costing us over $7 billion each year in hospitalization, medical and dental care, and loss of productivity. If we cleaned up our nutrition act we could save $2 billion (because many diseases are only partially due to nutrition- al inadequacy). Good nutrition means using common sense. However, many people lean either "right" or "left" when mak- ing food choices. On the one hand we have "Harvey Healthfood Fanatic" who religiously consumes organic vegetables and fruit, and masses of tablets which promise natural vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, "June Junkfood Junkie" exists on sugary danishes, french fries and every pro- The Employees of PoI .Tool Limiteèd (Oshawa) To Extended Health Care and Dental Plan 7 These employees now have the added bene- fits of extra health protection for themselves and their families: the Blue Cross Extended Health Care Plan plus Dental Plan 7. Now I ask you: where's the happy medium? Right under your nose. Try following Canada's Food Guide with a minimum of processed foods and a little imagination in cookery. Your food dollar will go farther, you'll feel better and you will find balanced meals become easy, everyday eating. Faddism is all around us. People who have received little or no training in nutrition suddenly become experts and their misinforming (and often dangerous) books become best sellers. An "M.D." or "Ph.D." after the author's name does not automatically mean expertise in nutrition. Nutrition is a science and requires specialized training. Food quackery does not always create minor, insigni- ficant problems. Cases in the Oshawa area have shown serious physical conditions resulting from "special for- mulas" advocated by popular so-called nutritionists such as Adelle Davis. How do people succumb such misinformation? The majority because of a lack of nutrition education. Many people feel that more nu- trients mean better nutrition - not so. Good nutrition means an optimum number of nutrients - eaéh in balance with the other. Megadoses do not create super-people, and in certain cases they can be very dangerous. Holds Presbyterial Meet In Peterborough Church The annual meeting of the Peterborough Presbyterial Women's Missionary Society (W.D.) of the Presbyterian Church of Canada was held recently at St. Stephen's Church, Peterborough. Members braved the stormy weather for a few refreshing hours of inspiration and fellowship as the year was reviewed in reports and plans for next year introduced. The theme "So then, as we pending on pills for your nutrients By 1980, it is estimated that one out of two Canadian meals will be eaten in restaurants or takeouts. If you eat out a lot, brush up on your best food choices - with nutrition know-how, it is possible to get a reasonable diet by eating out. Nutrition Week in Ontario is January 23 - 29, 1978. It's an ideal time to stop and take a look at your diet. Treat yourself to good health - it'll last a long lifetime. Any questions about nutri- tion? She challenged us to con- sider the needs of these times and ourselves - with honesty, - with a new vision and sense of purpose, - with trust in God to direct us, - and with a special love which must show itself in action. As she spoke about "The Five Questions God Puts to Us" they became as relevant today as they were to our biblical counterparts. Mrs. Andrews herself was an inspiration having worked in China, in Taiwan, at the Cecilia Jeffrey's school, Kenora, as well as in her community. President Mrs. A.W. Allen invited all to the Synodical W.M.S.'s meeting April 1-12 at Cambridge, and to the Pres- byterial Semi Annual meeting May 3rd in Havelock. In 1978 we sponsor a summer camper from Have- lock. PROTECT YOUR BABY, SAYSIAPA You can protect your child from suffocation if you are alert to possible hazards, says the Industrial Accident Pre- vention Association. The IAPA suggests you keep these points in mind when there are infants at home: Never let a child or infant put anything in his mouth. Even bread crusts and pea- nuts should be supervised. Make sure the adult rembers of your family, and the older children, learn the rudiments of mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing. Better still, have them take a complete first aid course. Be- careful to provide toys that are too large for a child to swallow. Check large toys for removeable parts or buttons. a O Í Mitchell's Corners Home and School Association Will Celebrate 20th Anniversary 1 wmm%ý
