Cartwright Sr. Citizens Aeeept Hall Comniittee The president of the Cart- wright Senior Citizens Club says the club would have no objection to a proposal from Scugog Township council that a new committee be formed to manage the old town hall in Blackstock and attempt to work out a solution to the problem of whether seniors should be required to pay a $10 rental fee for the weekly euchre parties held at the Hall. However, Mr. Bert Gibson added that the seniors still want to remove the platform stage in the hall and instaîl a fully equipped kitchen. He said the seniors would have no objection to using club funds on hand and applying for grants to cover the cost of such work, but if this were done, he said, the seniors feel they should have the use of the hall without paying the rental fee. Mr. Gibson was spokesman for a delegation of seniors who appeared before Scugog Council January 9 to protest the $10 rental fee which was to come into ipffect .anuarv 1 for the weekly euchre parties. It was suggested by Scugog couricil. at the meeting January 9 that a new commit- tee be formed to take over management of the hall, and that thîs committee would be made up of two members of Scugog council, one repre- sentative. from the senior citizen club and one repre- sentative from the Blackstock Woxpens Institute, an or- hoped that the problems could hall for its monthly meetings. Institute president Mrs. G. Skelding told Port Perry Star that the question of repre- sentation on this proposed committee would have to be discussed by the full member- ship of the Institute at the next regular meeting February 1. She added that while she could not speak for the membership until the issue had been fully discussed, she personally would have no objection to- at least a meeting with members of council and a representa- tiveé from the senior citizens club. The wish by the senior citizens club to instaîl a kitchen in the town hall in Blackstock created problems and hard feelings in the past couple of years among miem- bers of the club and the Womens Institute. The issue èame to a head in 1975 when the senior citizens returned a $5500 New Horizons grant from the federal government which had been eiar-marked for the installation of the new kitchen. At that tîme the senior citizens club and the local parks board had been unable to reach an agreement on the installation of the kitchen and the propsal to bring the washrooms now in the basement to the first floor of the building. The seniors suggested that the Institute members blocked the new kitchen proposal, however the Parks Board reasoned that installing the new kitchen and moving the washrooms would cost more than the grant money available because a whole new floor would have to be conistructed in the area where the platform stage is now located. It was also argued that considerable money had been spent to equip a kitchen in the recreation centre in Blackstock. In talking about the problem last week Mr. Gibson indicated that hie regretted the hard feelings that had been created in the past, and hie hoped that the problemns could be overcome. But he said the seniors still feel they need'a kitchen in the town hall which 'would allow them to serve hot meals at the euchre parties, and also entertain groups 'of Flowers are, share, rernembr For a complete selection of sympathy ftowers, cail your FTD Florisi Your Extra Tou"h floriats- 1 ..623-4441 llw e st .5S79-1118 visiting senior' citizens from other clubs in the area. He indicated that the club would be willing to attempt to raise additional money for renovat- ing the inside of the hall. which now is in bad need of repairs. The club could not minai puttîng its money to this use, hie said, but the members would object to having to pay any rental fee. A committee decided ast faîl that any group or or- ganization using the hall for an acitivity where adminis- sion is charged should pay a $10 rental fee to cover the costs of fuel and hydro, and this fee would come into ettect on January 1. In proporsing that a new commitee be formed to manage the hall, Scugog council also 'agreed at its meeting January 9 that the Cartwright seniors could con- tinue the weekly euchre parties without the $10 pay- ment until such time as the problem is resolved. -Port Perry Star S299 DEAN AVE. 576-1220A Charex j1 l*rtagedlxui Bowmanville Mall -623-3023 for Businessmen's Lunches DaiIy Full Course Dinners Party and Banquet Facilities Available Mon. -Tues. -Wed., 9a.m. toI10p.m. Thu rs. - F ri. -Sat., 9a. m.to 1a.
