6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. Febr M1 Canadians, MP Says Rather than referring ta Canadians as English Canadians and French Canadians, we should think of each other as Canadian English and Canadian French, a Nova Scotian MP said last week.î Speaking ta an audience of about 200 at the PC's annual federal meeting at the Clarke High School, Elmer MacKay urged that Canadians put the word Canadian first. He said last week that we are going ta have ta stop talking about other members of aur nation as if they were strangers and ta stop talking about "us" and "them." "I don't believe, ladies and gentlemen, that we have, enough patriatism yet in tis country," the MP for Central Nova said. in a brief talk last week, he charged that the ten years of Pierre Trudeau's government have been ten years of mismanagement. He des- cribed the decade as a " wasted" one and he said that the harm it has done cannot be straightened out very quickly. Mr. MacKay noted that trade palicy has seen Canada plunge from a standard of living second highest in the world ta a standard that is tenth highest. "The deficit in current accounts is greater than Mr. Diefenbaker's last total budget", Mr. MacKay said. Tory Funds Teetering? The federal Progressive Conservative Association found itself just $29.49 away from a deficit when it met for its annual meeting at' the Clarke High School last week, "I'm awfully glad ta see s0 many here tonight becauseý I'm going ta take up a collection," promised riding treasurer, Jack Plooard. The treasurer added that the party's campaign expense account has fared a littie better. It contains $106.66. Funds were speedily replen- ished, however, by guest speaker Elmer MacKay, MP for Central Nova. The Nova Scotian MP said, that in a recent trip ta the U.S. hehad been given a $100 cheque from an American lawyer who was interested in the work of the Canadian PCs. Mr. MacKay turned over the cheque to the Durham North- umberland Association since the riding was the first he visited since his return from south of the border. "That's in U.S. funds and that's a bonus too," he noted. In addition, the treasurer's report did not show the resuits of a fund-raising drive con- ducted in December. It netted $3785 from a canvass of party supporters, the members of the ridîng association were told last week. The ffrst sign of sprlng was reported Iast week while one of the year's worst storms was in full force.
