At a couneil session ini Whitby last Wednesday,, the regien agreed to pay $178,375 plus legal costs for the property. In addition, the vendor shall have the right te re-purchase the land- at market value in caseý the region decides te seli the land in the future. Region Wants "'Work for Welfa re" The Durham Region kill request that municipalities be allowed to employ ab1e-boded welfare recipients te do jobs that would not normally be perfermed by, civie work forces. The concept of "work fer welfare" was endorsed by regienal councillors last week on a near-unanimous vote. It will be referred te the Province of Ontario and- two municipal associations for their endorsement. Under the terins of-the plan preposed by the Durham Regien, ne person shaîl be displaced from his regular job as a resuit of work done by welfare recipients. Only employable, able-bodied per- sens would be asked te werk. The recipient would net work any more than the I M .4 I M M M I I I I M I M 4 amount of time he wo uld take to repay the social assistance . he received. For example, if the recipient receives $60.00 per week in social assistance and lie were employed by the municipality as a laborer, lie would be employed at the standard rate for themunici- pality. This means that if the recipient were te work at a rate of $5.00 per heur, lie would not be required to work any longer than .12 hours per week~ to~ compensate the~ municipality for assistance. Work performed under the. programn would be along the Unes of home repairs for senior citizens and ý handi- capped persons, tree planting programs and cleanup activ- ities in open space and conservation areas.1 SAVE SAVE IHY PAY MORE FOR HEATING SAVE ON PREMIUM QUALITYI ~ FUELI OI> FOR ALL YOIJR FUEL WIL NEEDSM 517 DUNOAS ST.
