That September, 1976, I joined the Trident Club because I wanted to have the chance to meet a boy whom I might marry. I was almost starved for a constant companion to love and came for. Howevem, November lst, my diabetes got out of control and I was hospitalized for it for ten days. By the end of the month, 1 returned to the dance. However, that day I had gone to the bank and given Mothem all but one bill to put in safe keeping. Aftem I got to the church, I discovered that what I thought had been a $10 bill was only a $1 bill. Because he was a gifted artist, he was able to take the dark and ugiy biot and turn it into a thing of grace and beauty. This is what Jesus did with Peter at the foot of the cross. Peter had' denied Jesus, and did s0 with each other and our stomies. I was particulariy împressed with his smile and he was impressed with the way I looked and acted. When the last dance was announced, I said "I don't know how to thank you" and then pro- ceeded to, kiss hlm, something I had neyer done before. Tom took me, home. To add to the mystemy, it turned ont that he lived only a few blocks from me. He gave me a kiss and said he would return to take me to an out-of-town dance of the s ame club the next night. His courage fled him when he was questioned by the crowd. He dis- claimed any knowledge of this prisoner they were going to put to death. Peter'sý denial goes down as one of the most infamous acts of al history. He had followed this man for three years up and down the dusty pathways of Palestine. They had shared joys and sorrows together. A bond grew between them, making them inýeparable. Just a few hours previous, Peter had vowed to foiiow him to the end. His own safety threatened, however, Peter retreated from bis Master's side and cowered along the fringes of, the noisy crowd. His denials stab- bed into the night air. The story does not end there, as we iearn that when the fuli impact of his actions dawned upon him, he repented, weep- ing bitterly. We know the rest of the story, as Peter became the lead- ing apostie in giving the story of Jesus to the world.11 1The spirit of forgive- ness and reconciliation is something we ail need todav for we are al ~2tEV h~ ~Rtu~renb j~et~r ~iixutz guilty of sin, either' of commission or omis- sion.
