The first Community Re- sources Handbook was pro- duced and distributed by members of the Social Plan- ning Council in 1976. As it was designed to meet the needs of the community, il was given free of charge to many groups and agencies ta whom the general public would came for information. The 1977-78 re- vision is now available at a cost of $2.00. Although hours- and hours of volunteer time went into producing this informative book, there were stili inevitable casts. The price of the book is ta caver expenses. Every family in the Town of Newcastle would benefit from owning a hand- book. Unfortunately, il was not passible ta produce that many copies. However, there is a limited supply at the office at Trinity United Church, 116 Church St. Bowmanville. The cost is $2.00 if picked up, or $2.50 if vou caîl 623-5023 and ask for it ta be mailed. If you have used the handbook and wish ta pur- chase, the updated ýversion, please make arrangements right away. Although the handbook is useful, it quickly becomes outdated. The Social Planninf Council would like ta finf either-a cheaper way of producing the handbook so that is could have wider distribution, or another way ta keep a wide range of commun- ity information up-to-date and readily available ta everyone in the town, especially new- comers. Some communities have information available at a central phone and someone available ta keep the'informa- tion current. An information centre of this kind, while offering a more complete service, would take more organîzation, manpower, and money. [t is the intention of the Social Planning Council ta find out how much this service would be used and if the local Council and community groups would help ta finance this community service if it could be shown that the. service is needed., Values Effective at Bowmanville Store Only 1Many people pity the loner and so they should if in fact he or she is a complete loner. The complete loner is that persan who has no friends and is outside the social circle. Often the complete loner wants ta be part of the group but doesn't possess the skills ta cape with it or because of his character- istics is rejected by the graup. Such a persan needs help or else a livetime of extreme unhappiness is ta be faced. I also pity the other extreme. The persan who has ta be part of the group at all times. Generally speaking people don't recognize this problem as readily as they do that of the complete loner. In some ways its as diffîcult a burden ta carry, if one has ta be with the graup, as il is ta neyer be part of the graup. Some people always have ta be gaing someplace and be with someone most of the time. Upon those occasions when they are alune they feel lonely and often despair. These people too can lead unhappy lives because they expend so much energy en- deavauring ta be with people and kidding themselves that they are having a good time. A letdown is sure ta came.
