8 The Canadian Statesman, Local ocke' Un Oshawa L Bedding Unlimited upended Starr Furniture 6-2 in the final game of the Oshawa United Auto Workers (UAW) Hockey League season to clinch first place and a berth in the annual Oshawa UAW hockey tour- nament for the O'Keefe awards, February 11 and 12. Tom Conahan scored two goals and assisted on three others for Bedding to sweep past Dean Morgan and Doug Crough to capture the indivi- dual scoring race. Rick Evans, Al Emard, Tim Ashbridge and Dan Balson inche Welding Hockey at the Silver Stick Tourney may have been anti-climatic after the task players and parents had getting there. Some players with their parents spent up to twelve hours in their cars on 401 Highway in the Kitchener to Woodstock area before being rescued by local skidoo club members. After long hours in cars everyone was transported to shopping malls, truck stop restaurants and private homes, leaving their cars abandoned on the high- way. This gives most people a queasy feeling leaving their car up to twenty miles from where you are staying with no means of transportation and the highways temporarily closed. There were many irritations but when you consider not one person in our group was hurt in any way, and only a couple of cars suffered minor damage you would have to think someone (up there) must have been watching over us. Almost all of the parents left home early Thursday morning to have the boys in Port Huron for their first game Thursday at five p.m., but it was ten a.m. Saturday before coach Hooper and manager Goulet (after dozens of phone calls) assembled a team, for some of the players to even make it for this time they had to board a Charter bus carrying the Sudbury Pee Wee team leaving Kitchener at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning. These kind people would only except our thanks for transporting our boys while we went looking for our cars to try and make it to Port Huron by noon Saturday. I think I could say for all of us we were treated with nothing buts courtesy and kindness by eVeryone. We also realize we were inconvenienced but really suffered no hardships. Now for the hockey. After getting a team ready for noon on Saturday our first game was set back until 10:20 p.m. B0wmanville, February 8, 1978 y Players eague scored the other goals for Bedding Unlimited with Cal Petit drawing three assists. Emard and Rob Maddock each had one assist. Craig Vanderburgh and Ken Morden scored for Starr with Morden, Bob Menard and Mike Cronin each picking up an assist. Starr Furniture picked up seven of the 13 minor penalties with each team drawing three minors. The first four goals by Bedding came on powerplays while Starr scored twice while enjoying a man advantage. At Port Huron Saturday night against Atlanta Georgia with Bow- manville winning by a 5-2 count. The game started slowly with Bowmanville scoring the only goal of the first period. Mark Mathews from Dana Peebles just before the period ended. Dana Peebles scored early in the second period from Mark Mathews followed by Kent Wilcox from Paul Dadson and Scot Paterson. Atlanta got their first goal of the eleven minute mark and looked like they might come to life but one minute later their goaltender accidently slid the puck right out in front of his net while trying to clear it away and Todd Hooper pounced on it to make the score 4-1 at the end of the second period. The two teams traded goals in the third period, Jon Janack after being nicely set up by Doug Dilling and Brent Thompson halfway through the period and then their final goal near the end of the period. This was not a particularly well played game but a good win. The Bantams' second game was at 11:40 a.m. Sunday against Stoneybrook. This was a good game our boys winning 3 to 2. Paul Daason opened the scoring at the five minute mark, the only goal of the first period and his second of the year from Tim Almond and Dana Peebles on the power play. Stoneybrook came out flying to start the second period tying the score in the first minute then going ahead 2 to 1 at the five minute mark. Our boys turned things around after their second goal apply- ing good pressure but could not get the equalizer until the last minute of the period which Todd Hooper fired through a maze of legs after a goalmouth scramble for an unassisted goal. Both teams had good chances through the third period and with two and a half minutes left in the game and overtimne looming a Stoneybr'ook defenceman carried the puck nonchalantly to safety back towards his own end but was checked by Jon Janack and sudden disaster for Stoneybrook as the puck preceded Janack and their man into the net for what was the winning goal. Our guys picked up a penalty in the last minute but an overworked defence pair of Dadson and Wilco, and the penalty killing (orwards kept the opposition off the score sheet. Our third game and second game of the day at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, January 29 against Port Huron. This game was for the Consolation Championships and if our boys won we would be Consolation Champions, but had never lost a game. The rules committee had now decided that if we won this game we would play Sarnia for the winners champion- ships at 10 a.m. Monday, January 30th. With many teams not getting to Port Huron to play and much rearranging by the rules committee, our boys were given the chance to be consolation and champion winners something that has not happened before and may not happen again. Port Huron 2 Bowmanville 1 In the all important third game Port Huron scored in the last minute of the first period and again early in the third period for 2 to 0 lead. Although they were outplayed most of the time. With one second left in the second period Todd Hooper picked up his own rebound and scored to make the score 2-1 for Port Huron. The third period belonged to Bowmanville but they were "stoned" by a hot goaltender, losing the game 2 to 1. There is little consolation in the knowledge you have outplayed a team most of the game and outshot them 27 to 11 for three periods but lost the game and with it the dreams of a silver stick. Tough luck, now lets get Lindsay in the first round of the league playoffs. Frank Toros Eiminated The W. Frank Major Pee- wees are out of the playoffs now after losing 2 of their playoff games. The lst game (which was played in Lind- say) featured the Toros having a 2-1 lead at the beginning of the final period but only to have the home team storm back with 3 goals in the last period to take the win away from the Toros who had played 2 good periods of hockey. The scoring of the lst game is as follows: First Period 3:35 left in the 1st period Mike Glass tipped in Tim Preston's shot to give the Toros the lead. Glen German also earned an assist on the play. Seconds after the Toros D & RI D&R Sports Toros had a busy Saturday on January 21 as they hosted Whitby in Bowmanville at 1:00 p.m. and lost 4 to one and then travelled to Lindsay where they beat their hosts 4 to 0. In the Whitby game, Toros played well enough to earn at least a tie but could not find the scoring touch around the opponents net. Whitby scored the only two goals of the first period. The second period was scoreless and in the third period both teams scored once. Paul Heron was the marksman for D&R while Whitby goal was scored by Milse Mivakis. The final score was 4-1 in favour of Whitby. Toros were no sooner in their street clothes when they started heading out to Lindsay to their second game of the day. In Lindsay, the game featured a legitimate hat-trick by Toros Mark Hickey as the team captain scored three straight goals, two in the first and one in the third to lead D&R Sports to a 4 to 0 win over Lindsay. The other Toros goal was scored by Kelly Balson. The shut out was shared by goalies Mike Knight and Ken Cameron and defenceman Peter Hughes, Gerry Winsor, David McAllough and Chris Moroz played flawlessly in front of them. Lose to Cobourg On Saturday, January 28th D&R Sports Minor Atoms travelled to Cobourg for their Young Canada Day Tourna- ment. The first period featured fast skating and lots of offence as Cobourg scored first at the 1:27 mark. Toros got this one right back when Mark Hickey scored unassisted at the 2:49 mark. Mark Hickey scored again just before the period ended to give Toros a 2-1 lead. However this was the last goal Toros could manage for the rest of the game as Cobourg turned on the power and scored four unanswered goals to claim a 5-2 victory. Most valuable player awards went to Toros Mark Hickey and Cobourgs Roy comeb ck, until a 5th Lindsay goal (fþeir 2nd shorthanded Recreation Department to Hold Playground Traininn The Town of Newcastle's department of parks and recreation will hold a play- ground leader training course goal of the game) at 4:03 dampened their spirits, but it was a 6th Lindsay goal that really hurt the Toros. The final score of the game came with 18 seconds remaining by Dan Ritchie from Troy Wood and Paul Stocker made the score more respectable. The Toros enjoyed solid goaltend- ing in the series from Billy McArthur and Scott Bate as they were outshot in the 2 games 48-24. The team now prepares for a tournament in Collingwood. Good luck Toros. Course beginning March 6 in the Bowmanville High School. , Classes will be .held seve evenings between March 6 and April 5. After a scoreless 1st period Irr Sports Minou Murphy. Congratulations Mark for your selection as Toros MVP. Beat Oshawa Bruins 4-0 On Sunday, January 22, D&R Sports Minor Atom Toros hosted Oshawa Bruins at Darlington Sports Centre and defeated the opposition 4-0. The first period saw Bruins start quickly and press Toros in their own end but Toros' defence and goaltending thwarted Bruins attack time and time again. With about one minute left in the first period D&R scored when Greg Martin potted a goal with assists going to defenceman Gerry Winsor and linemate Ian Wheelock. This goal ignited the Toros and they scored three more goals, two in the second period and one more in the third. Scoring was done by Kelly Balson with two assisted by first Paul Herron and second by Ian Wheelock and Greg Martin and Jay Kelly un- assisted. In the game in the second period Toros played two men short for almost two and a half minutes but good penalty killing and excellent defence and goaltending kept Bruins off the scoreboard. The goaltending chores for Toros were handled by Ken Cameron and Mike Knight. Lose in Consolation Final On Saturday, December 3, D&R Sports competed in the Cobourg Hockey Tournament. This first game was at 8:00 a.m. against Cobourg and although our boys played well they lost 4-1. Bowmanvilles' goal was scored by Kelly Balson assisted by Greg Martin and Ian Wheelock. In the second game our Toros met the Oshawa Canadians in one of the best games of the tournament. The first period was score- less but featured good offence, hard checking as defenceman on both teams proved to be tough against the opposing teams forwards. In the second period the Toros hit the scoresheet on a fine three way passing play when they broke out quickly Lindsay broke the game open with 6 goals, in the next 2 periods. However the Toros were not pushovers in the game. They managed to score 4 times themselves, with all 4 scored in the final stanza. The second period ended 3-0 for Lindsay. But Tim Preston put the Toros on the score- board at 13:27 with an unassisted breakaway goal. Lindsay then increased their lead to 4-1. Two straight goals by Bowmanville put them back in the game 4-3. Steve Taylor from Paul Stocker and Glen German from Ron Hop- croft were the players in- volved in the two scoring plays. At this point the Toros and their fans sensed a Atoms from their own end. Mark Hickey fed a pass to Paul Herron, who passed to Jay Kelly. Jay skated in alone and scored a wrist shot. Oshawa then took three straight penal- ties. In the third period Jay Kelly scored his second goal of the game on a perfect set up from Mark Hickey. The shutout was earned by Toros' Mike Knight with honourable mention to his defenceman Gerry Winsor, Chris Moroz, David McCul- lough, Robbie McEackern and Peter Hughes. This win put Toros into the consolation final and matched them against the Oshawa Red Wings who blitzed them for the entire first period and jumped into a 3-0 lead. In the second period Toros dominated the rest of the game. They scored twice in this period to close the gap to 3-2 going into the third. Goal scorers were Mark Hickey assisted by Jay Kelly and Paul Herron and Kelly Balson assisted by Greg Martin and Ian Wheelock. Oshawa goalie Allen Aylesworth robbed the Toros of at least two more goals. The third period was again dominated by Toros although they scored only once. Mark Hickey blasted one into the mesh assisted by Jay Kelly and Paul Herron. Oshawa also scored once.
