Healthy Comedy, by Drama Workshop ..n,,r* n -tfl~O qIFCTION JTWVf _________OTA IO_ -CH8,97 Cast photo ieludes the following persons: Seated are John Amesbury and Wynne Wonnacott. In the back row (left to right) are: Doug Barber, Tara-Lee Allun, Suzanne Cook, AI Nichols, Elizabeth Prower, Pat Rundle, Peter Sobil and Iris HeiIam. Look- Out! William Uggims doesn't know the danger that lurks behind his back in this seene from the Manhattan apartment of J. Francis Ainber., Mr. Amber- (the man with the axe) is a thoroughly evil actor who is one of the chief characters in. a play performed by the Bowmanville Drama Workshop last week. Shirley Amber (i cowboy hat) lu a spry 94-year- old. An appropriate gift for Valerie Rogers, portrayed by Suzanne Cook. In spite of an unexpected explo- sion on stage,, the cast and crew of the Bowmanville Drama Workshop managed to keep their show on the road during aproduction at the high sehool last week. The extra action took p lace when the players performed U.T.B.U. (Unhealthy to be Unpleasant), last Thursday night. It was the first night of the performance. Near the end of the play, a bomb was supposed, to gooff, complete with a loud noise and a cloud of smoke. The device worked perfectly last Thursday evening except for the fact that it exploded several scenes too early. Show Goes On The actors on stage at the, time took a startled look in the direction of the smoke and noise and somehow managed to carry on with their uines - an excellent exampie of what peopie mean when they say "the show mustgo on." Aside from the maifunction of the expioding device, the production of Unhalthy to be Unpleasant turned out to be a first-rate comedy., The two-act play by James Kirkwood is ail about an organiza- tion that is in the business of making certain the world's most unpleasant people get exactly what they deserve. The organization carefully re- searches its victims to make sure that the individual they are about to destroy is truly obnoxious. Once suspicions are confirmed, the unpieasant person- is ýbiasted to smithereenis by a weli-placed bomb. Offering no attempts to psycho- logicai treatment and no opportunii- ties to simply turn over a new leaf, this method is a drastic but certainly effective way of eliminating the world's most awful permson. Many of the bombings carried out by the organization are the work of William Uggims. Portrayed by AI Nichois, Mr. Uggims is a biindman who manages to complete bis grim assignments in spite of the fact that hie is constantiy bumping into things. Appropriate Target J. Francis Amber, a nasty and tempermental actor portrayed by John Amesbury is certainly an appropriate target for Mr. Uggims. Wel -qualified in the field of unpleasantness, the overbearing tyrant is mean to bis servants and even nastier towards members of bis own famiiy. Amberý, we discover, is piotting to do away with bis mother, Shirley. We learn that J. Francis Amber wants to seli the last seven acres of property owned by his dear, 94-year- old parent. It seems that the money from the land will heip finance a play be is producing in, Britain. Shirley Amber, protrayed by, Iris Heliam, does not want to p art with the property because iRis te site of the f'amily cemetery and an Indian buriai ground. But J. Francis Amber, who is not sentimental about these tbings, decides to obtain the land by foui deeds. Poisons His Mother He is slowiy poisoning bis mother by slipping a deadly drug into hier cognac. Fortunately for Shirley and un- fortunateiy f or J. Francis Amber, Mr. Uggims intervenes. He sees through the actor's deception and, successfuliy plants a bomb in the actor's apartment. .And if youj think that al this violence against unpleasant people is a littie unpleasant in itself, _you can rest easy at the end of the play. By the time the curtain f ails, William Uggims, the mad bomber~ gets bis own reward for 'the unpieasant things that he bas done. The BoWNmanviile Drama Work- shop performed Unhealthy to be Unpleasant last Thursday, Fridýy and Saturday evening. Members of the cast not already mentioned are Pat Rundie, Wynne Wonnacott, Elizabeth Prower, Peter Sobil,' Suzanne Cook,' Tara-Lee Aluin and Doug Barber. The play was directed by Janice, Leak. She estimates that about 650 persons watched the play thre nîght last week, a good turn-out whenyo cnsider that a capacity crowdwould bave been 900.
