Loyalty A short while ago, the Sun Life Insurance Company announced its plans to move out of Quebec. Their reason, loss of business due to the language bill wbich demanded that business be conducted entirely in French. Immediately there arose a wave of protest by local govern- ment. The company's officials were branded as being disloyal and exploitive of Quebec. Loyalty was a matter oL concern. for Jesus some 1900 years ago. On Palm Sunday he arrived in Jerusalem to a hero's welcome. The following Friday, he was put to death like a criminal. Some of the sanie people Who had shouted hosanna as he rode regally in a procession of adoration, shouted for his death a few days later. The world today cries for loyalty; for faithful, steadfast loyalty. 1 I remember reading a story some years ago, that was very poignant. It told of an Englishman Who had gone to a distant village to collect a debt. With him went his faithful dog. He received his payment of gold. As he was returning with his bag of gold tied to his saddle horn, he stopped at a roadside inn for lunch. He set his bag of gold down on the floor beside his chair so he could watch over it. t fter he had eaten, he il asleep. Upon awakening, he lept on his horse and rode off, forgetting his gold. The dog belan to run ini front of the horse and bark to get his master's attention. Then the dog began to snap at the horse's heels. But still bis master did not understand. At last he decided the dog had gone mad, so he pulled his pistol and shot hini through the head. The dog dropped, mortally wounded, to the ground ~E±EV ~ptakz b~ ~R~euereub ~t~r Iixnt~ and 'the man continued on hjis way. Suddenly hie remem- bered the bag of gold. He wheeled his horse around and returned to the place where hie ha d shot his faithful. dog. There was only a pool of blood on the ground. When hie reached the roadside inn, lie found his dog beside the bag og gold. He was dead. He had flot understood, but hie had remained loyal to the end. 4"6Loyalty is flot a fugitive memory for grandmothers and grandfathers to tell about.
