6The Canadian Statemnf, B'wmatwllle, Mardi 15, 1978 Section Two Favor Partial Interchange At Hoit Road The Durham Region has agreed to recommend that Ontario Hydro and the Ministry of Transportation and communications purchase enouigh land at Hait Rd. for a full-fledged inter- change. But for the time being, only a partial interchange at Hoît Rd. is being recommended by the Region. At a meeting in Whitby last week, Durham's elected, officiais voted in favor of endorsing the partial inter- change ta serve the Darling- ton Nulear Generating Station. Its exact configuration will be negotiated with Ontario Hydro and the MTC, Ministry of Transportation and Com- munications. Depending on the kind of structure finally approved at Hoit Rd., the cost could total one-haîf to three quarters of a million dollars. A full inter- change -which had been endorsed by Newcastle council last year would have cdst betweén $1.1 and $1.5 million., "ýThe projected traffic volume did not indicate a full interchange would be re- quired,'" commented W.A. Tweivetrees, commissioner of public works for the Durham Region. He was speaking at last week's regionai council session. Regional councillor Bruce Taylor pointed out that while Newcastle council now supports the idea of a partial interchange for Hoît Rd., it lias also recommended that enough land be purchased for a full interchange if necessary. Counillor Taylor described the securing of 'land for a larger facility as one of the key parts of the town's suggestion to the Ministry of Transportation and Commun- ications and Ontario Hydro. Couniilor Taylor urged the region to request tflat extra land be set aside. He explain- ed that some Newcastle coun- cillors still do not believe that apralinterchange is big enul ohandie future traffic idf UnlfPA Broken Roiler Closes Sehool In Newcastle The cost of repairing a steam boiler which broke down at Newcastle Village Public Schooi could go as high as $10,'000.
