You must con- tinue toward your des- tination. This Sunday is Palm Sunday and for Jesus some 1900 years ago, it was the point o f n0 return. Until this point in time, he was an itinerant preacher plod- ding up and down the Palestipian paths preaching a new gospel of love. When Jesus rode intô Jerusalem on the back of an ass, accepting the acclaim and shouts of the crowds, his course was set. This marked his public prounounce- ment of the-Messianic role. From here, there could be no0 turning back. The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the ,aaeof palms, was ilaimn to be King. The people accepted him as the long awaited liberator. The distinc- tion between the true character of his king- ship,- and what the peope. expected of him, precipitated the events of the following week. They wanted a king on their conditions, not his. When they could not mold Jesus into thoir kind of puppet king, the shouts of Hosanna be- came shouts of "Crucify him crucify him". When Jesus was nail- ed to the cross, the crowd mocked him, "He is the King of the Jews ", they said, "let him corne down frorn the cross and we will believe him", The kingship of Jesus was not baseY on world- ly ambition and power. It was based on the nobility of sacrificial love. Many eop=le itoday are lk toein the Palm Sunday stands of long ago. They desiro a Saviour who will satisfy their personal desires, without the dernaos of comrnitrnent. They want him to rescue them from their troubles, and forgive their sins, without the challenge of obedience and loyalty. Instead he cornes as Kine. To receive hirn as Saviour, is to acknow- lodgel him as Lord of your ife. To come to his cross for pardon, is to place yourself at his feet 1in obedient service. When Jesus entered Jerusalem declaring his Kingship, hie passedthe point of no return. When we receive him as King we too pass the point of, 11o return. We cannot go half-ay with him. t is at teay or not at alI. During the darkest days of the Vietnam war, President Lynd.on B. Johnson, in a televi- sion address, appealed to the American people. Near, the end of his speech he said, "Every mght when I turn the lights out to sloep, I ask> myself; "have I done everything I can to unite, this country? Have I done overything I could to bring peace to this world? H ave .I done enough? Ask yourself that question ,. . . ask each other, have we al donie enough? "» The kingshi~p of Jesus challenges us with that samoe question. Have we, have you, done enough? Doos your coin- mitment to Christ and his purpose transcend ail elso in your life?
