Durham By Murray D. Emke, Ass't. Agricultural Rep. 4-H in Durham County What does 4-H mean? The name "4-H" comes from the first letter of these four words: Head, Heart, Hand. and Health. The first "H" is the symbol standing for the training of our Heads to think and to plan. The second "H" is the symbol standing for the training of our Hearts to be kind, sympa- thetic and loyal. The third "H" is the symbol standing for the training of our Hands to be skillful, helpful and useful. The fourth "H" is the symbol standing for the importance of Health.' 4-H is basically designed for young people living on farms and -in rural areas. 4-H Agricultural Clubs are open to both boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 19 as of January 1, 1978. Small Measures - 1 mL, 2 mL, 5 mL, and 25 mL. As part of your gif t, you might include a metric ruler - very handy in the metric kitchen. If this useful gif t is received with a little uneasiness, it is assuring to know ,that the conventional measures wilI still be used for old favourite recipes. But tempting metrie recipes also can be tried, if the kitchen is equipped with the proper metric measures. In using the metrice system, the measuring will still be done the samne way, by volume, since only the unit of measure is changing. New baking pans won't have to be bought immediately. Even though new pans on the market will be marked in metric, by volume, the old ones are similar. enough to be still usable. To find out their volume, simply fill them with water using a metric measure. Like anything new, it will take time to adjust to metric recipes. The more ynu use them, the easier and more natural they will become. Go ahead and try! Maple Syrup TLour Time The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is now conducting its annual maple syrup demonstration at the PurpÎle Woods Conservation Area. Tours for the general public will be held during the week of March 20 to 23 (closed March 24) and on the weekends of March 25-26, April 1-2, and April 8-9. Tours of the sugar bush operation will start at 11: 00 a.m. and 1: 00 p.m. They will leave from the parking lot. Ail school days, until April 14, have been booked by watershed schools for student tours. The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority, in co-operation with the Durham A.M. Kiwanis Club, bas scheduled a pancake weekend for April 1-2 with alternate dates of April 8-9 in the event i inclement weather. The Central Lake Ontario .~ Conservation Authority will be running tours of the suagar bush starting every hall hour fromn 9: 00 a.m, until 3: 00 p m. ~ Visitors, in addition to a sugar bush tour, will have the opportunity to purchase pancakes and fresh maple syrup. Rides on a horse-drawn sleigh or wagôn will also be availaible at a nominal charge. There is no charge for the tours or for admission to the conservation area. Purple Woo-d Conservation Area is located on the south- east corner of Simcoe Street North and the lOth Concession. Entrance to the area may be gained off ofthe loth Conices- sion. Pension111s for xSenýIors t RseEfcie pi Increases in the Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Spouse's Allowance, have been announced by Health and Welfare Minister Monique Begin. Effective April 1, the new monthly total at the single rate for persons receîving both the basic Old Age Security pension and maximum Guaranteed Income.Supplement will be $266.54. For a married cupl, oth persioners, the com-bination of the basic pension and maximum supplement will rovide a payment of $50846 lor the couple monthly. The basic Old Age Security peson will rise to $156.66 from the present $153.44. The Guaranteed Income Supplement is paid to pensioners whose income, aparttfrom the Old Age Suit pension, is limited. The amount of the supplement varies, in relation to the amount of income. The maximum Guaranteed Income Supplement- for a single peýrsocn, or a married person oAhose spouse is not a pesoe and is not receiving a pues Allowance, will go up in April to $109.88 from its current $107.62. The maximum supplement for a married couple, both pensioners, will increase to $97.57 each from $95.56, Added to the basic pension, this will giVe each married pensioner $254.23 monthly, or a total of $508.46 for the couple. The Spouse's Allowance is paid to persons between 60 and 65 years of age who are married to Old Age Security pensioners and meet residence requirements. Entitlement to a Spouse's Allowance, and amount paid, is based-on yearly income. The maximum Spouse's Allossance will increase to $ý254.23 fi om $2-19,M. The maximnumn Spouse;'s Allow- ance is made up of an amnount equivalent to the basic Old Age Security pension and the maximum Guaranteed Income Supplement at the married rate.
