Dear Friends: carefully. This is an important message. Please read it 1As you know, Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. wanted tobuild a new uranium refinery and was 'te disposai site on 700,acres of lakeside property near Port Granby, half-way between Bowranviile and Port Hope. ýEldorado is a federal Crown corporation, owned and operated on your behaîf by the Government of Canada. The federal government appointed an Environmental Assessment Panel, te hear testimony and evidence, and te, recommend whether the Port Granby site was suitable for this project. After months cf.public hearings the Panel concluded that, for both environmental and social reasons, neither the refinery nor the waste site should be permitted on the Port Granby property. As Member cf Parliamentfor this area I have con- sistently stated my opinion that the new refinery shouid be iocated in the 11ort Hope vicinity, but the nuclear waste site should be in some other more isolated location. I have sound reasons for this opinion. I believe the economic needs of our cormunity far out-weigh any \smali environmental dangers that might be caused by a new refinery. Our unempioyment rate is higher than the national average, and we need the jobs the refinery will create. Furthermore, with its long-established operations in the Town cf Port Hope, Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. las developed a skilled and experienced pool of workers who are readily availabie for the efficient operation of the new refinery. It simply would not make sense for Eldorado te start from scratch in some-other part of the country. The waste disposai site is part of a different picture. ControlHo ard -- a federal agency responsible for policing all nuclear matters -- indicated it wouid net permit a permanent nuclear waste site at Port Granby. As weii, federal authorities are actively considering right now the creation of isolated storage centres where ail of Canada's nuclear wastes -- including those from nuclear-powered generating stations -- can be safely disposed. These, potentiaily ha zardous wastes will be buried under carefully controlled conditions, in a way that will1 effectively minimize the long-term danger to future generations of Canadians.I consider that a sensible solution to the nuclear wasteproblem. The Environmental Assessment Panel announced its rec 'ommendationï against both the ref inery and wastesite at Pbrt Granby on February 28th. Since then, many Port Hope citizens have urged the federal governinent to ignore the Panel's decision. Others have demanded the Panel be reconstituted, to hear further testimony and evidençe. There are others -- myseif included,-- who suggest that an alternative site for the refinery should be f ound in our area. Stili others do flot wiant the refinery anywhere in our area. Presumably there are some who don't care what happens. This is an extremely important decision, that must have a profound effect on the economic future of our community and the well-being of ail those I represent. I need your help in formula- tinq the stronq representations which now must be made to our federal government. Would you please complete the questionnaire on the enciosed postcard and return it to me before Mardi 3lst? To create a fair sampling of opinion, only one shouid be completed by each househoid. 'No postage stamp is required. Just drop the card in the nearest mailbox. There is no need to sign the card if you donIt wish to. But we should know in which municipality you live. Durham - Nortliumberland MP Wants Refinery to Stay Put and Dump to go Elsewhere. Federal Member of Parliament, Allan Lawrence has reacted quickly and firmly in his efforts to retain the Eldorado Nuclear refinery proposed for the Port Granby area west of Port Hope. The above letter and questionnaire have been mailed out to 5,000 households in the Port Hope, Port Granby, Wesleyville and Newtonville area. Lawrence hopes that the response will be sufficient to indicate to the decision-makers in the federal government that the residents of the area really do want the company to stay. At the same time, however, Lawrence states that he is opposed to the waste dump, and feels that it should be located in another area as a permanent facility. In another batch of correspondence we have received'fromn a group of concerned Port Hope businessmen, there is reference to a poli the group took immediately after the decision to rejeet the refinery and dumip. They receivect 4,581 names, 3,692 from Port Hope and 889 out-of-town. According to thie group, 90 per cent were in favor of retaining the refinery and dump, 7 er cent were neutral, and 3 per cent were opposed. It censists cf an ûil spray and a Ilimre- su1lphur sol14iîî. Whern you are buying thé dormant spray make sure you get two preducts in different botties. The one will have the cil spray, whichwill coatrel the overwinteriag insects. The ether product is the lime suiphur solution which will dlean up the fungi such as scab or other fungi that have overwintered. The reason that you can net buy these products together la one container is that the cil would stay on the top and the products will net be mixed properly. Make sure when you mix the twe together that you kYeep it well stirred s0 that the spray will be evenly applied. Lawn Fertiliger Now is the time cf the year te start fertilizing your lawn. You have probabiy noticed that when the snew meits your lawn is rather brown. This is due to, the leaching cf the nitregen which dees net stay suspended in the soil during the winter months. Nitrogen is the first number cf the fertilizer combination such as 10-6-4 etc. ~A lot has been writtea on the different kinds cf fertilizers te use. 1 must admit that it is a very confusing subject, mainly because every differ- ent fertilizer company has a different formula or a different analysis. They al dlaim to be the right one te ~use. Mly advice woukl be to iilad out what the nitrogen part consists of. Whether t is a straight chemicai, or whether it is a urea base or whether it has the suiphur ceated area pellets in the nitrogen part. The cheaper the cest cf the fertilizer, the less the product wîli do, take a straight 10-10-10 which is used on the farm, it wiil have a very short benefit fer the lawn, since the nitregen wiil green up the lawn but will have ne lasting effect. This type cf fertilizer could be lused early M _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ M M M M in the spring to get the lawn green. Afterwards you should start using a fertilizer that has at least a 40 per cent part nitrogen to keep feeding the lawn over a longer period of time. Il aiways bfflhers me t seee peoplebuy fertilizer on price only. Most of the time they sure are not getting their money's worth. Another thing that bothers me is the coverage which some of the cheap fertilizers have marked on the bags. You can cover an acre with 50 lbs. if you could spread it that thin, but is sure would not do much for the acre of lawn. The best way to know what to appiy and how much to use is to drop ia at your local garden centre, seed store or hardware store.
