Mcegor MjorA tom roros Eliminate Sas' desro m Somem-Fials The Bowmanville McGregor Jj1arçlware Major Atomr Toros finaily ~elminated the very stlbborn Bay Ridges squad from the O.M.H.A. Lakeshore Semi-Finals in a game played on Saturday, March 18th at the Memorial Arena in Bowman- ville. On Wednesday night ina game played in Don Beer Arena in Bay Ridges, these two clubs battled to a 2-2 deadlock to, force the fifth game. In the game played on Wednesday evening, the team captain, defenceman Brian Heard sent the Toros into a second period lead when he scored on a beautiful play engineered by Chris Dreossi and Tom McLaughlin. At the 14:50 mark of the final period, Brad Cruess gave Bowmanville a 2-0 lead after stéaling the puck off a Bay Ridges defender and it looked as if the Teros were going to blow thie Bay RidIges team right out of the building. The Hardware squad, were in complete control of the game and just wouldn't allow their forwards to get past centre ice. The wingers were fore- checking the "Bay's" skaters and taking their, men off the puck with great authority. With only 3:14 showing on the dlock, a defensive lapse in the Bowmanville end gave the home club a scoring opportun- ity they capitalized on. Then, with 2:08 remaining in the game, the Bay Ridges squad scored the equalizer. This was the second tie for the Toros and it gave it each team four points. Alan Ulrich was in goal for the Toros and was very steady. On Saturday, March 18 in Bowmanville, the McGregor Hardware squad were really up for this game winning 5-1. At the 3:19 mark of the opening stanza, Tom Mc- Laughlin sent Bowmanville into the lead, assists going to Chris Lee and Chris Dreossi. Chris Dreossi gave the Toros a 2-0r lead when he scored with assists going to bis inemates Brent Neill and McLaughlin. The never-say-clie Bay Ridges s quad narrowxed the gap to 2-1 when they scored at the 7:55 mark. The second period featured the Major Atom. Toros at their best when they- scored three goals in four minutes. Brent Nell gave Bowmanville a two-goal cushion again when he scored, assisted by McLaughlin and defenceman Pierre St. Amand. Greg Watson scored the fourth 'goal on a nice passing play. Assists on the goal went to bis wingers Jon Clieff and Jeff Dawson. The last goal of the game went to Chris Dreossi, assisted by Greg Watson. This was a particularly hard-fought series between these two fine hockey teams. All the lads on each team gave a big effort, and even though it was a hard-hitting series, a tremen- dous amount of sportsmanship was displayed by both clubs. Chris CIlifton was in net for Bowmanville and was full value for the victory, making several key saves. The Bowmanville Major Atoms will now advance to the O.M.H.A. Lakeshore- Finals with Ajax supplying the opposition. This also. promises to be a very exciting series with the two teams ex- changing wins and losses this season. This is the second year in a row these two teams have met, in the Championshîp Finals and the Toros' are very ý,nxfious to square things with Ajax, who won -th~e linor Atom Champiofnship 1ast season. The first gam~e of thie series was played on Tuesday evening in Ajax with the second game going in Bow- manville on Saturday. Reduce if Overweight. Give Heart Fund loche Weldin9 Defeat Ajax The Major Bantams warmed up for the George- town Tourney that started Monday when they played a two game total goal series against Borden, Ont. with only the winner to advance, by defeating Ajax, a team that normally handles our guys in regufar season play. Todd Hooper opened the scoring near the two minute mark of the first period with an unassisted goal. Then with time running out Kent Wilcox fed a pass to Dana Peebles who carried into the Ajax end drawing both defencemen to him before slîding a perfect pass to Mark Mathews to run the score to 2-0 at the end of one period./ There was no scoring in the second period. Ajax scored two goals early in the third period and it looked like the game might end in a tie but the Ajax team that had been taking foolish penalties the whole game ran out of luck with just less than three minutes left in the game. Todd Hooper checked the puck off an Ajax defenceman just outside bis blueline, the puck went behind him and right onto Jon Janack's stick who skated in unmolested, waited until the goaltender moved and flipped it through bis legs for the winner. Dana Peebles rounded out the ÏWoring twenty 'seconds later from Mark Mathews and Mark MacLean. The Ajax team seemed to find an attraction in the penalty box as they had at least one player in there for most of the game. Minor Barîtams Lose to Ajex On Saturday, March l8th Plains Minor Bantams played host to Ajax and were defeat- ed 3-2. The Toros opened the scoring at the 6:45 mark of the first period when Brad Clems fed a pass to Steve Cary who in turn passed to Robert Kennett all alone in front of the net and Robert put it pas t a sprawling Ajax goaltender. The Toros went two up at the 7:55 mark of the second period on a goal by Barry Cullen picking up his own rebound, Bill Hogarth picked up the assist. Ajax scorçd the first goal at the 10: 50 mark of the second period on a shot from the blue line by Andy Branigan. Ajax tied the game at the 12:02 mark on a goal by Paul McGee with George LePine and David Bush picking up assists. Ajax scored the winner at the 2:02 mark of the third period on a goal by Andy Branigan assisted by Dave Bush. Plains Minor Bantams will play in the Collingwood tournament on the Easter weekend and this will bring their season to a close. H.L& Wood Win Exhibition Games Playoff elimination has not affected the Toros as they have been good for 7 wins in their last 9 contests. On March 13, Orono hosted the truckers at Darlington arena with the Bulls coming out on top 3-2. This game proved an exciting contest with maniy good scoring chances at both ends. Goaltending was by far the highlight of the game with the Toros George Kennett and bis counterpart from Orono putting ona spectacular display. At the end of the first period the Bulîs found themselves down by 2 goals. This was narrowed to 1 in the second frame when Scott Heard scored, assisted by Deryk Clark and Chris Michelson. At the 6:05 mark of the third period Raymond Cummings stole the puck and marched in to even up the score on a fine unassisted effort. Just 2 minutes later Kelly Matthews connected on a setup from Gordie Rogers to bag what proved to be the winner. On Saturday, March 18 in their last home game the Toros defeated Ajax 3-2 to end up with a 5 win - 3 loss record against the club they could not beat last season. Bowmanville opened the scoring in the second period on a great end to end rush by Scott Heard. The assist on this goal went to netminder Donn ie Hayes who along with a great job in the net picked up this point. A neat passing play by Deryk Clark to Danny Weir and finally to Scott was behind this marker. Early in the third period Ajax bounced right back to tie up the game but with just 43 seconds showing on the dlock Scott Heard passed tp Deryk Clark who in turn fed it up to Chrîs Michelson whichi resulted in the winner on a great shot by Chris. TÈhe Bulîs were few this game with only 3 extra skaters on the bench and despite the absence of some great players a fine effort proved re- warding. 623-5580 We want every one to know that D & R Sports seils bicycles for ail ages as well as ska teboards.
