APage or ittie Editor Carolyn Mostert A VISIT WITH HERMAN Hi kids! It's me, Professor Herman H. Headbog- gler, expert on the human body. I arn going té talk to you about another exciting topie, the-hey, did you hear that? It's a funny thumping noise, like an overgrown rabbit hop- ping on my floor There it is again. -Oh well, I like overgrown rabbits hopping on my, floor, as long as they don't go through the foor. This morning I went into my Private Roorn, where I keep ail rny degrees. I h ave 879 degrees in the' Smart- ness of a Human Being, you know. I hung them ail on the wall.* Suddenly there was a crash and 163 of my degrees fell down. I had to put them ail back up, one by one. That is when I discover- ed degree number 41, which is today's topie, the - there is that funny noise again. Like I was sayine, my exciting topic is the heart. First of ail, i should mention that the heart is not shaped like a heart. What I mean, is, the heart does't look like the kind of heart you get on Valentine's Day. It )oks like a normal ,ïeart. And in case you didn't know, a normal heart looks like your fist.* (1 can still hear that thumpnfing sound.) Charm flot exactly Rt34isk fLAm - Lef± A+r'ic4rt, Le-s \Je~-i+r'~cle 'Venrricle. Headboggler, expert on the human body. The heart itself is a muscle. It opens and closes the doors of its four littie rooms, pumping blood around and around the body. I guess you could say that blood is like cars on a highway with the policeman heart directing the traffic. Biood must always go around and around in- side of us. It is the heart's job to keep the blood mov- ing. (That thumpity- thumpity-thump sound is getting louder.) Let's f ollow some blood as it goes through the heart pump. When lhe biood is fînished delivering food and air to the fingers and toes, it cornes back to the heart. The blood goes into the right side of the heart and travels through two rooms. The heart then pumps and squirts the blood into the lungs. Af ter loading up with air, it, cornes bac k to the rooms on the left side of the heart. Then the heart gives another thump and sends the blood to deliver the air to the rest of the body. When the blood is finish- ed, it cornes back to the heart and lungs for more air. The heart must keep working ail day and ai, night, for every day of your life. It pumps approximately 80 times a minute, squirting blood through the body. If I can multiply right, that's 4800 times an hour ..1i5,200 times a day. . .l'Il let-you figure out the rest.- That's a lot of, W0ORD. thumps forq heart! Q: While we were away on a two-week vacation, vandals broke into our home and did $400 worth of damage. Nothing was stolen, but in addition to the $400 repair bill, ail the food in our deep-freeze had spoiled because the wall socket was smashed. The loss of the food amounted to another $150. H ow much of ail this will our homeowners policy cover? A: Keep cool. Your homeowners policy should cover the loss in full. The $400 is paid under vandalism and malicious misehief, and the $150 is paid as a consequential loss since it was a resuit of the kind of physical damage your home is insured against. If you have any questions about your insurance, just give me a cali. I probably have the answers. After ail, SAFECO agents are the Prof essionals.
