The series finished on Friday -night here when Essex completely dominated play, to win by aC somewhat lop-sided margin. The trop hy presentation is pictured here, wîth Capt. Mike Reaume receiving the coveted award from OUA executive rnemher T .rrv Clr THON Sturday, May 27th, 1978 (LOOK FOR DETAILS NEXT WEEK) By Don Wilcox Bowmanville Port Darling- ton Marina and Hotel Junior C's were eliminated by the Essex 73's in a series which went five games in a best of seven. Essex recorded its third Provincial C title in four tries. Eagles have thehonour of being second best of ail the Junior C teams in OHA play last season, and is a record they should take great pride and a special degree of satisfaction in, especially this season as they were assessed by many of the experts to be caught in a rebuilding year, finishing weil down the ladder. Essex on the other hand were overwhelmingly picked to repeat iast years great record, Eagies recorded one of only three losses by the 73's in the entire 77-78 series inciuding piayoffs truly a phenominai record, Eagles coming very close on two other occasions being only one goal down at the final buzzer. Essex won the final game 11-3 in a game where they dîd everything right,' and Eagies, the "Opposite. Essex 73's in many areas were strong enough to be a contender in OHA Junior B play, their very large drawîng area along with a very fine local development system has given them a strong team with Windsor Spitfires the only other Junior team in a wide area. Eagies goal which was to unseat the Essex 73's right from the first time they laced the blades on last September had a team record of 31 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss over the regular season--play, going into piayoffs eliminating Lindsay, four straight, Stouffville four straight and at this point they were at a mental high and also in top physical condition and were truiy ready to meet Essex,. The next series of events were their pitfalls first going against Gananoque, a team which offered littie or no opposition, Eagles who escaped injuries all season were hit by severai whiie winning the series four straight, a series which no more than a best of three series. The, next opponents were the Alliston Hlornets, a team of hard nose veteranis who had eleven players return from iast seasons team saw Alliston push the series to seven games, a series which had everything overtime, each team winning two games on the road and" finaily the seventh game 3-2 going into the third period. Engies finaiiy winning in the third period, this series had some bruisirig hockey takinig its toal on both teams. Essex on the other hand had a very easy path with no true opposition on their route to the final and coming into the series against Bowmanville disgustîngly healthy. Eagles turned in a gutsy effort in the finals and if it had not been for the handy work of traîner Grant Ogden who used cases of tape on his battered and bruised charge whose medicai report took on the line of who is heaithy rather than who is hurt with several players out of the iineup. Everyoyne associated with the Eagles should be proud of' his or ber contribution to the team as very fine entertain- ment was provided to the fans each time Eagles took to the ice. Each player shouid be very proud and satisfied with his seasonveterans Gary Cox, Chrîs Dwyer, Kim Rasmussen will not be wîth the team next year as they reach the ripe old age of 20 becoming overage for Junior Hockey, Bob Koczulab will be going to University we wish them al well and the best of luck. The maoiyof the other players hpflywill be back next season and witli the many fine players coming up through the area systems, Eagies again couid have a strong contender and hopefuliy an Ali-Ontario Junior C crown.
