Apart from the displays in the museum, whîcb run back to the early days of Durham County, the building and the grounds are of historical value and interest. The Museum is located at 37 Silver Street in Bowmanville and, of course, before 1858 Bowmanviile wasý part of Darlington Township. On April 1, 1797, the Crown granted Lot 12 of the lst Concession in the Township of Darlington, County of Durham, in the Province of Upper Canada to, a Major Evans. The Museum land was originally in Lot 12. It was quite normal for the government in those days to grant large parcels of land to the senior officers, in the army, (a policy that partly caused the rebellion in 1837). Major Evans conveyed 125 acres in 1808 to John Burke and on June 23, 1824 this same 125 acres was conveyed to Charles Bowman. It is difficuit to determine wbat was on the land at that time but it would appear that it was stili farmland when Bowman bought it. Bowman- ville was, of course, named after Charles Bowman. Bowman divided bis parcelof land into lots and he created lots 170, 171 and 172 on the east side of Silver Street, the property on which the Museum now sits. Bowman still owned these lots when lie died. Bowma-i-n was very wealthy and owned a great deal of land when he died and as a resuit the Parliament of Canada passed a special act to administer the estate of Charles Bowman. Among those appointed to administer tbe estate was the Hon. John Simpson of Bow- manville. The Administrators conveyed the three lots to David Fisher on February 27, 1858, Fisher built the bouse wbicb is now the Museum, but it is not known wben it was actuaily built. In addition, in 1870 and 1871 Fisher bought lots 168 and 169. These two lots now bave the library and the bouse at Wellington and Temperance on tbem. Witb this large mansion and tbe expensive grounds, the property was at least on a par witb any estate in the area. In 1901 John H.H. Jury purcbased the land from tbe estate of David Fisher and tbe Jury family owned most of tbe property until late in 1960. Sarab Jane Williams bougbt the property from the Jury family and conveyed it to the Town of Bowmanville to be used as a Museum for tbe cultural benefit of tbe Town. The building is a Georgian style bouse witb 14 rooms plus a conservatory. The front verandab is unique in tbat it surrounds tbe whole front portion of tbe bouse and bas an upper and lower level. Tbe grounds bave over 50 varieties of flowers and 17 different types of trees including a magnolia -(wbicb. will be in floWer on tbe opening, May l8tb) a yellow forsythia and a yellow locust. Presently on display in the Muse um are antique paintings of local artists, quilts from 1840, antique farm equipment (including an unusual looking instrument used to file borses' teetb) and wedding dresses (including the one worn by Mrs. Janet Jury). The Museum is baving its officiai opening for 1978 on f% "-- 299 DEAN AVE. OSHAWA 576-1220 Chargex Tbursday, May lBth and the staff are bopi ng for a large tiirn out of local residents. Unfortunately, in the pas!, the Museum bas been enjoyed mainly by non-residents, who are visitiiûg in, the Bowman- ville area. The staff bave worked very bard to make the Museum capture the elegance and cbaracter of tbis area in tbe last century. We hope tbat ail people interested in their origins wili come and enjoy botb tbe building and grounds and the items on dispiay.
