10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmaniville, May 24, 1978 Section Two Tury New Dianthus Dianthus is an attractive plant that bears brilliahtly- colored flowers suitable for garden decoration and cutting. Home flower gardeners should try the new variety of dianthus called Snowfire, says John Hughes, Ontario Ministry of Agrieulture and Food extension horticulturist. This variety, which won a silver medal in the Ail- American selection for 1978, will be available at garden centers and bedding plant outiets this spring. Dianthus plants produce large flattish heads of sweet- scented velvety flowers. They will grow success-fully in either partial shade or sun. Snowfire, developed by a seed company in Japan, has bi-colored flowers of white with cherry red centers. The flowers are 11/ to 2 inches in diameter with sturdy blue- green foliage.. This variety will be a popular one witb home gardeners because of, its uniform heîght and erect growth, says Mr. Hughes. The average height will be 6 to 8 inches under Ontario conditions. The hybrid vigor bred into this new dianthus will support flowering throughout the summer. OBI' 1TUÜAR1%Y MRS. MINNIE McHOLM It is given to few people to live to the age of 102 years, and fewer stlll to retain the ability to share mentally in the present at that age. Mrs. McHolin was one of these.
