Canadians like tbeir potato cbips. La 1976, more than 100 million pounds of chips were produced in Canada by eigbt cbip-producing companies. But tbe Canadian cbip industry must import potatoes for part of the year because of a storage problem. Canadian cbipping potatoes accumulate sugars during storage. These sugars discolor the potato when itis cipped and neduce its consumer appeal. Agricul- ture Canada scientists now are testing ways to overcome this problem and make our potato chips an al-Canadian product. Mrs. Flintoff, Mrs. Molley and Mrs. S. Buttery were in charge of the program. Various games and contests were conducted. Always keep tbese vows before you. One man refuses the discipline of such commandments. He says, "I want to be free. 1 won't take any vows upor myself. I don't believe in it because it is legalism."' Let me paint you a picture of two men. One will not take vows. H1e will not accept any responsibility. He wants to bI free. He is free in a measure. just as a tramp is free. The third vow is, "Neyer defend yourself." If Wo insist upon defending yourself, God wiil let you do it. But if you turn the defence of yourself over to God, He will defend you. Hie told Moses in Exodus 23:22, "1 will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary to thine adversary." We defend Our talents, our service, above al our reputation. Your reputation is wbat people think you are. Your character is wbat you are. The fourth vow, "Neyer pass anything on about anybody else that will burt him. Love covers a multitude of sins. "I Peter 4:8". The tale free. Let us look at any great mari wbo carnies upon bimself the weigbt of government. Sucb men are not, free, but wben they sacrifice their fredom, they also step up t.heir power. if tbey insist upon being free, tbey can be free, just like the tramp, but they choose to be bound, and tbey bave made a wise choice. There are five vows tbat we would do well to keep. The first is, "Deal thorougbly witb Sin." Sin bas been driven underground tbese days, and bas corne up witb a new name and face. Sin is being called by some fancy names, like missing the mark, and a split personality, anytbîng but what it is. People do not get under conviction of sin anymore, but they get a guilt complex. Instead of con- fessing their sin to God, they lie on a coucb, and tell another man all about tbemselves. Lt comes out after a wbile that tbey were deeply disappointed when tbey were two years old. Tbat is supposed to make them better. The wbole tbing is ridiculous, because Sin is still the ancient enemy of the soul. Lt bas neyer cbanged. "The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but rigbteous- ness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." We must trust God to deliver us from sin. Don't caîl your sins by any otber name. If you are jealous, cali it jealousy. If you pity yourself, and feel that( you are not appreciated, caîl it wbat it is-self-pity. There is resentfulness. One man- complained tbat somebody is always doing bim wrong. If you bave that sin, deal witb it now. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from ail sin. Tbe second vow is, "Neyer own anytbing." I do not mean that you cannot bave things. I meanr that you ougbt to be delivered from the sense of possessing tbem. Did you know that ail babies are born witb their fists clencbed? One of the first tbings tbey say is, "Mine, "in an angry voice." That sense of "This is mine", is an injurious thing to the spirit. If you can get rid of it, tbere -will corne a sense of freedom nanld liberty into your 11f e. Don't tbink that you must seil ail you bave, and give it to cbarity. God will let you have your car, your business, your b earer has no place in God's favour. If you want God to be good to you, you mnust be good to His cbildren. The fifth vow, "Neyer accept any glory." God is jealous of His glory, and willl not give His glory to another. Ile will flot even share His glory with another. It is quite natural for people to hope that their Christian service will give them a chance to display- their talents. They want to serve the Lord. They also want others to know that they are serving the Lord. They want to have a reputation among the Christians. That is very dangerous ground. It's bad enough to seek a rep- utation in the world, but it is much worse seeking a reputa- tion among the people of God. Our Lord gave up His reputa- jetter,~eI confidence that brought success for the Mets. It was his slogan that became a rallying cry for players and fans alike. His slogan was "'You gotta believe." in the game of life we need to adopt the same attitude. We need not live with fear, frustration and failure if we only believe in God and his enabling power. The writer of Hebrews in the New Testament puts it well as he says, "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the convic- tion of things not seen". IHeb. .11:1. Much of human progress in histury has been accomplished by those who attempted the unattainable,~and the impossible because they believed they could succeed. Names like Moses, Nightingale, Gandhi, Lincoln, Pope John 23rd and Kennedy stand out as examples of those who initiated great social reforms tion for us, and so must we. These vows cut across the old nature. They introduce the cross into your life. Nobody ever walks back from carrying bis cross. Wben a man takes bis cross, He has already said "Good-bye" to bis old if e. He is not coming back. Wben you make these vows, remember, that you introduce the cross into your life. They strike at the heart of your self-hife. Remember these five vows. 1. Deal tborougbly with Sin. 2. Neyer own anything. 3. Neyer defend yourself. 4. Never pass anything on' about anybody else that will hurt him. 5. Neyer accept any glory. "Thy vows are upon me,. O Lord. 1 will' render my' praises unto Thee. By Rev. Arthur Ama cher 1Here in Canada, in the early years af ter Confederation, our Prime Mimister John A. Macdonald and bis colleague sought to accomplish the ipssible, weld Caaa together on a ribbon of steel stretch- ing from shore to shore. They were crîticized,, condemned ' and, denounced.. During the debate -in Parliamfent more words were uttered than are in the Holy Bible. But they neyer wavered in their belief and we today reap the 'dividends of their faith in doing the impossible. Take a few moments and/ reflect upon your life with its doubts, fears, and uncertain- ties. Then have the same kind of faith the old preacher showed qach morning when, be prayed, ."Lord, nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I çan't handle together." We live in an age where many people only believe in the hard metal of facts. They, have to see beforethey believe. This is one of the results of the modemn intellectual explosion' where wonders of the past are explainable in the light of new knowledge. As an enlightened generation we have divorced ourselves from faith and espoused the philosophy of Willard Duncan Vandiver who popularized the phrase, "I am from Missouri. You have got to show me." A basebaîl team, the New York Mets, spent two months in last place in 1973. When the season ended, they finished in first place, winning the National League pennant. Much of the credit' for this spectacular finish went to a young pitcher named Tug McGraw. It was not his pitching ability so much as his
