Wants RquestiL.,( Newcastle's public works committee bas recommended that town council deny a request from the Union Rod and Gun Club to open part of the road north of the third concession in an effort to give club members and other groups access to the property during the winter. Roy Fleming appeared before the committee at its last meeting on Friday to state the club's case. H1e said it wanted to use the facilities al year and that other groups in the municipaiity were also beginning to use them. These groups included an archery club and the police department. Jack Dunham, director of public works, had written a report on the request for the committee and in that he recommended the request be denied because of the cost, estimated at $10,000, and the current town policy which insists that the municipality not open any closed roads. Part of the problem that confronted the committee was the town's allowing the club to construct the building and facility without baving to request an entrance permit. Since no entrance permit was ever granted, the club sîmply used the closed road. One of the problems facing the club, as pointed out by Mr. Fleming, was the insurance casts. Once the insurance company discovers that the tawn's tire engines cannot negotiate the road to the club, premiums will skyrocket. The committee listened ta Mr. Fleming's brief and deliberated on- the matter later wben the committee had moved in-camera. Pauline Laba, cousin of the bride.
