Parent Advisory Committee Plans Creative Playground For Vincent Massey School The final meeting of the Vincent Massey Parent Advisory Committee for the 1977-78 school year was held on June 6. Attending the meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Linton, Mr. and Mrs. George Latter, Mrs. G. Bayliss, Mrs. B. Wood, Mrs. D. Edwards and Mrs. M. Williams. Miss R. Gibson, Mr. H. Stapleton and Mr. Stan Green represented the staff. The meeting opened with the good news that a Creative Playgrouid would be built at Vincent Massey. Mr. Wayne Linton and several others had visited Courtice Public School's new playground and were impressed with what they saw. The playground committee plans to draw up a design in the fall of '78 and begin construction in the spring of '79. Mrs. G. Bayliss told the committee that the present buying power of Dominion tapes collected is approximately $30.00. In the fall a piece of equipment rneeded y the school will be chosen and with the continued support of parents it will be bought in the not too distant future. The immediate vicinity around Vincent Massey has begun to show many new Block Parent signs. Mrs. Donna Edwards said that the Block Parent Committee had set themselves a goal of 30 homes in the area and to date have had 27 homes approved. Certainly, a very good start to a most worthwhile program. The meeting concluded with an open discussion on many varied topics concerning the school. No date was set for the next meeting in the fall. Treasurer and Manager Told to Pay Own Fees Although members of the finance committee thought it was a good idea for the town manager and the treasurer to belong to professional associations, there was no way the town was going to pay the membership fees. In a request to the committee, Albert Guiler, town manager, and Klaas Degroot, treasurer, asked the town to pay their membership in the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and the Certified General Accountants Association. The fees were $35 and $135 a year respectively. "Mr. Guiler was hired as a town manager, not a clerk", said Mayor Garnet Rickard. "If they want to pay to belong to these organizations them- selves, they're quite welcome to do so, and I'm all for it. It broadens their horizons. But it's all the same to me whether it's $35 or a thousand dollars and I can't support it." Mr. Guiler claimed that he had belonged to the clerk's association for six years and he believed it was helpful in his municipal work. This is the first time either he or the treasurer had made this- request. The town manager withdrew the request when the committee turned it down. "I feel the same way about the treasurer's request," Mayor Rickard told the committee. "Part of the reason I supported his salary increase and change in classi- fication was the fees he had to pay. Councillor Don Allin said that he felt the town should establish a policy regarding matters of this kind because of the numerous requests the committee received and the number of associations there seemed to be, pertaining to municipal employees. q.)at deeît peg, ýQog CUUddtîtg Reverend F.F.
