6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. June 21, 1978 Mr8. Greenwood DisplaysHer Farewell Gifts can be used and installed on any type of building. Several things will affect the way aluminum wears: sait from highways, industrial pollution and hail stones. The hail has been known to dent the siding altbough the occurrences are rare. Compared to other things you can do to your home, aluminum is remarkably competitive in price andi MY. Fleiscbmann will be the first to admit tbat's what hie likes: good dlean competition. It's, for this reason and the others that his sales have jumped 20 per cent in the last year and will probably jump another 20 per centthis year. Business has been good for Mr. Fleiscbmann and hie likes to think that hie bas returned some of the community's inetment in his company. N'tonly does hie pay the usual business taxes, support the local sports teams, and hire local students for the summer; but hie also hires students from the Bowman- ville Training Sehool, baîf way bouses and otber institutions for boys having problems fitting into society. "I believe in tbose things," Mr. Fliescbman stated. "I try to teacb tbem and give tbem a hand so that they can fit in. We had one young man who turned out- really well from Bowmanville and if he came back, I'd bire him full time." Supreme Alumin4.um operates out of a central building on Osbawa's Simcoe Street and bas a showroom featuring all the products and colors tbat they have in stock. It's probably the only one of its kind in Canada; but when you consider that Mr. Fleiscb- mann is probably Canada's only diesel mechanie who turned to aluminum siding, that's not very surprising. Bv Ian Mulgrew Aluminum siding is becoming more and more popular as people begin to demand more and more leisure time and freedom from tbe annual cbores of looking after their bouses. It is this desire that bas allowed Otto Fleischmann to take Supreme Wîndow and Door Products (Osbawa) Ltd. from a bankrupt comnpany in 1962 and build it into one of the region's most successful businesses, employing some 14 people. Yet it is this desire tbat also produces scores of fly-by- night operators and back-yard businessmen wbo open up sbop every summer in an attempt to fleece the public witb promises of inexpensive siding and a lifetime of leisure. Mr. Fleiscbmann is only too aware of these conmen and would like to see a regulatory body establisbed wbich would Police the aluminumn siding business and rid it of these scavangers. Installing alumninumn siding is a trade. Some men pick it up in a matter of montbs, others neyer learn it. Mr. Fleischmann talks of the men wbo do it properly as crafts- men, men who are carpenters witb mnetal. Unfortunately, their skill is often overlooked because siding appears to be easily installed. "You must know bow deep to drive tbe nails, bow close- to put tbe siding, bow to mitre, bow to cut angles; you have to be a carpenter," be says. "A lot of the people in the business bowever, aren't. And I feel sorry for the public wben I see tbis bappening. You bave to learn tbe trade properly and it takes about as long as it takes a buman being to walk: some men learn easily, while otbers will neyer learn to walk. Our foreman is a master carpenter. Mr. Fleischmanin believes that money is the only mwotivation most of the fly-by- nigbters bave. Instead of being driven by tbe desire to do a good job, they're driven by the lure of tbe big dollar promised by the aluminumn market. People want aluminum siding for many reasons: it's attractive, it insulates and tbus saves on -fuel bills, it doesn't need to be repainted every year and it carnies a 20 Now'sYo ur 'Chance to Perform BOWMAN VILLE JAYCEES' WEEK Amcateur Night Thursday, JuIy 6th starting at 7:00 'p.m. SOPER CREEK PARK Sponsored by COWAN PONTIAC-BUICK Register at Cowan Pontiac-Buick or phone Don Gillespie at 623-4367 year warranty. Aluminum. is strong, durable, and comes in evervY color of the rainbow. In.the summer, aluminum keeps tbe heat out and the inside of your bome cool; in the winter, it keeps tbe cold out and your bome warm. Correctly installed, it can be an excellent investment and greatly increase tbe value of a bome, but tbat's providing it's correctly installed. 1"We're empbasizing Personal service", said Mr. Fleischmann. "I'm not saying that we don't make mistakes, we try to avoid tbem. But wben we do, we go out and correct tbern. "If you cbeck tbe yellow pages you'11 find. only three or fOur siding installers listed. Tbe rest are fly-by-nighters and only come out between April and September. Try and find tbem once tbe cold weatber arrives. Yet tbey'll ahl give you 20, 30, 50 year guarantees and wbat not, but try and find tbem." Tbat's the key wben shopping for siding: will tbe installer be around to rectify any problemns tbat come up? If hie won't, tbere's lîttie solace in baving a 20 year guarantee. In bis 18 years in business. Mr. Fleischmann bas encountered only one problem with bis siding, and that occurred recently in Waverley Garýdens in Bowmanville. Holes began to appear in tbe siding after it was put up; some sort of chemical apparently bad been deposited on tbe back of the siding wbile it was in storage and bad eaten tbrougb it. Tbe siding bad been installed, by the customer and Supreme replaced tbe damaged sheets. Installing it yourself is an option open to, people sbopping for siding, and you can buy your aluminum from Supreme. You'll also get a booklet on bow to do it. "We encourage people to give it a go tbemselves and if tbey follow tbe booklet step by step, everytbing will go well. Wè don't guarantee tbe work- manship ,on customer installed orders but Kaiser Aluminium, who supplies us, still guarantees tbe product," Mr. Fleiscbmann stated. Tbe aluminum manufact- urers are the source of tbe guarantee on ahl aluminum jobs. Tbey're tbe people that will replace tbe product if it rusts, corrodes, or peels durîng the guarantee period. But buyers should beware: tbe companies do not send out salesmen or solicit private business. Everything is doue througb dealersbips and anyone purporting to bc from Kaiser or Reynolds or one of the other manufacturers and trying to sell you aluminum, is not on the level. If vou want to check on an installer, Mr. Fleiscbmann suggests you cal] tbe Better Business Bureau or the local Chamber of Commerce. These organizations can tell you quickly wbether or not you can count on tbe person or company, and tbe information is free. As well as aluminum siding, Supreme instalîs vinyl siding, aluminum doors, windows, eavestrough and can perform a variety of other services. But, its mainstay is aluminum siding. So far, the company does mainly residential re- modelling jobs, and new subdivisions.
