Bo manille Man Wins Lift Truck Comptto Cecil Aibin of Jackman Rd, Bowmanville, takes possession of a 1978 Pontiac stationwagon which he will be using during the next five weeks compliments of General Motors of Canada Limited. T 'he use of-'the car was Mr. Albin's award for a first-place finish in a GM lift truck rodeo held in Oshawa recentlv. oe h Handingoeth keys is Carl Diederichsen, plant manager of GM's fabrication plants. Mr. Aibin has won three first-place awards in ift truck competitions this year. One of the top lift truck drivers for General Motors of Canada Limited lives in Bowmanville. Cecil Aibin, of Jackman Rd., recently took first place in a competition among lift truck drivers from 14 GM plants in southern Ontario and Quebec. Twenty-eight drivers were entered in the competition which was held in Oshawa. First prize for Mr. Aibin was the use of a 1978 Pontiac stationwagon for five weeks with gasoline supplied. Cecil Aibin bas been employed by General Motors for 21 years. He now drives lift trucks and tractor trailer transports in the GM north plant.« His first-place finish in the GM competition was one of tbree top performances lie has turned in this year. Mr. Aibin also won first prize in a lift, truck competition at GM's north i-,r.fabrication plant and lie took another top award at a competition sponsored by the Industrial Accident Prevention Association in Ajax. The lift truck rodeo in Ajax included about 50 drivers from' across the Durham Region. Describing the lift truck competition, Mr. Aibin said "It's more ini how you handie the lift truck and get through the obstacles without knockîng anything over." The contest consists of simulated obstacles that a lift truck driver miglit face on the job. These are represented by markers on a course. Each driver must manoeuver bis machine loaded with a pallet tbrougb the obstacle course and points are lost wben course markers are knocked over. Whle Mr. Albin is a newcomer to lift truck competitions, lie says lie will probably compete again next year. With prizes sucli as the use of a 1978 Pontiac station- wagon, Cecil Aibin says the competition is, well worth entering. Plenty of Pupils For'7 Waverley Sehool Wben, Waverley Gardens' new elementary scbool opens its doors about one year from now, there will be no shortage of pupils.% In fact, a few portable buildings may, be needed alongside the new building. Bowmanville trustee Andy Tbompson pointed out hast week that originaliy the school board had requested a 15- classroom building in the Waverley area but its request was trimmed to 12 chass- rooms, John Gowing, western area superintendent for the North- umberland Newcastle Board, estimated that if ahi local students from grades K to six attended scbooh at the Waverley Gardens, the student population would be over 500. "If we try to bouse tbem there from day one we are going to bave portables," Mr.. Gowing said. He added that the enrolment of students attending classes in the portable buildings on Waverhey, Rd. this faîl wihl be about 350. However only the students from grades une to four attend classes tbere., To accommodate additional students, the board of education will set up six more portable classrooms in Waverley Gardens this year. This wilh bring the number of portable buildings to 16. S With more leisure ime there seems to be more things for an individual to do to occupy that ime, inside and outside no matter what the season. Along with this tre nd vacations are being taken at varying imes of the year. Driv ing around central Ontario thîs summer, aside from the startling fluctuations in gasoline prices, it is amazing t he number of empty school buildings. The grounds are often in use for recreational activities yet those buildings those expen- sive buiictings, lie empty adprone to attack by vandral and punk. How much longer must we continue to pay the cost, the high cost of these buildings and the tenance costs and not get a full year's use out of them? Given a five day week with 12 statutory' holidays and a three week vacation, you and I will work an average of 228 days a teacher forty three âays less. A teacher works on a 10 month contract, whereas we work for 12 months. We both pay taxes a large amount of whic fi are used for,, education costs. I would also imagine with, the availability o f varying vacation interests even the teachers would like to take holidays other than in July and August. It would probably turn into an administrative headache in the first year but why not a four semester sehool year? em eme Dialogue s wrth Dennîs the opinions an~ coneerno of Demis SaJ[.r THE ';L01flr.
