10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 2, 1978 More than '175 attend Burketon-Enniskillen Meeting More than 75 residents of Burketon Station and Enniskillen attended a public meeting Thursday night in Enniskillen where the town released ifts district plans for the hamlets. Although the Enniskillen plan confained little that was controversial, the Burketon Station plan called for such Crayoning in the Sun things as underground wiring, two acle lo's, ani longi1lamp seet lighting. Leslie Kristof, planning director, said te two acre lots were necessary to preserve the rural character of the hamlet and- to prevent erosion. efficient. Is this merely studied ignorance or a frightening disregard for the safety of ALL if e on this planet? But why concern ourselves only with nuclear power, when there are over one hundred known poisons already present in the Great Lakes, the if e-support system for 37,000,000 people. And now carcinogens are, literally RAINING FROM THE SKY at a rate of tons per year. A grim harvest is waiting when such deadiy seeds are sown. If you thifik that individuals are powerless to oppose such horrors perpetrated on such a large scale, then stay at home - but don't dare breathe the air, drink the water or eat the food. But if you believe that even a few voices raised in unison cari rouse a sleeping populace, then join us at 1 p.m. Monday, August 7, at Soper Creek Park, Bowmanville. Jeffrey Gold 623-2730 Hon. James Snow, Minister, Transportation & Communications, 3rd Floor, Ferguson Block, Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario, M7A 1Z8 Dear Mr. Snow, Through this letter, I am asking you to make regulations or introduce a bill in the Legislature this fal requiring the installation of seat belts in all sehool buses and making their use compulsory. Your Ministry's statistics show substantial reductions in deaths and injuries to occupants of automobiles since mandatory seat belt legisiation was passed more than two and one-haif years ago. In fact, deaths were a dramatic 64 per cent lower in the first quarter of 1978 than they were in the sîmilar period of 1975 when beit use was optionai. I believe the benefits of seat belt use shouid be extended now to the 600,000 school children who are transported daily by school buses. Although it is recognized that sehool buses are the safest vehicles on the road, the (average) two deaths and 200 injuries that occur in schooi bus accidents each year could be reduced markediy by seat beit, use. t is worth the minimal cost and inconvenience -- especiaily when the dead and injured are those in their early years. The installation and compulsory use of the beits in the school buses would have a major spin off benefit too. Habits, including the use of seat beits, are formed at an early age. Children who are belted in automobiles from baby stage insist on using the beits as they grow up. The absence of beits in the buses they ride during their school years, breaks the habit and causes them to be more indifferent about their use when they become drivers and adult passengers. There can be no doubt too, that school bus drivers would King St. Engineering Stili Nqeeds Approval Town officiais are awaiting approvai of the engineering drawings and tender forms for the King Street repairs from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications so that tenders can be lef t. Albert Guiler, town manager, said Monday that once ministry approval was have far more freedom-into- concentrate on.their driving if the students were buckied up. As you know, the report of the' Ontario Legisiature's "ISelect Committee on Highway Safety", tabled in September of iast year, stated: "The scale of prospective tragedy in a serious school bus accident is increasing as school buses, for economic reasons, become larger." Several suggestions for greater safety were suggested, but it said that "Seat belts and padded safety seats appear to offer greater promise. " .Your governiment has full authority over seat beit policy. 1 urge you to bring forth the necessary regulations or legis- lation to provideï mandatory seat beit installation and use in ail schooi buses. Yours truly, Mel Swart, MPP Welland - Thorold of Ministry received, the work could begin three weeks after tenders are called. The drawings and tender documents were sent for approval two weeks ago. Under normal circum- stances, the approval procedure takes approximately three to four weeks, so the town expects tü hear from the minister this week or next. Mr. Guiler said everyone on the town's staff was trying to meet the September date for start-up. Frost conditions could pose serious problems for the work and cause the project to be delayed until next year. The town is hoping to get started as quickly as possible Rhonda Crawford puts the finishiiig touches on her colouring at the West Beach park. Newcastle's recreation department reported last week that its summer parks program is going well and the children are enjoying themselves. Rhonda is involved with the program in the West Beach area. Playground leaders are provided for each park in the municipality where the need for such a service exists. There is no charge to parents for the service. Letter to Editor Dear Sir, August 6, 1978 marks the thirty-third anniversary of an event which is symboiic of the Atomic Age: the destruction of Hiroshima, Japan, by a nulear weapon. The effects of that devast- ating "show of strength" are still visible in the survivors of that hoiocaust and in the children bora to them. Following Worid War 2, an atomnic industry grew, fostered by those who saw the potential for energy and political power in radioactive elements; substances which had been locked safeiy in the earth's oldest rock.
