When the starship-like racing cars of the Can-Am series move to Mosport for the Molson Diamond Can-Am- Trans-Am weekend, August 18, 19 and 20, the track will look more like star wars than car wars. With their sleek wide bodies and wings that produce downforce for faster cornering instead of lift for flying, the Can-Am cars will be driven by a field of drivers from as far away as Australia and'as near as Toronto. Expatriate Austrahian drivers Alan Jones and Warwick Brown lead the points standings for the Citicorp Can-Am Challenge with Americans George Folîmer, AI Hoibert and Elliott Forbes-Robinson in hot pursuit. Jones from Mebourne who ives in London. England, is a regular front runner on the Grand Prix circuits of Europe and between races he jets to -North America to drive in the Can-Am at the wheel of the futuristic iooking Chaparrai Lola of Jim Hall and Carl Haas which is sponsored by First National City Travelers Checks. Jones' lead in the 299 DEAN II~4.I AVE. II~~I OSHAWAj ~j57-1220 ChargexI points standings is based on three wins in six starts so far this season. Mosport's Molson Diamond Can-Am is the seventh race in the ten-race series. Jones' countryman Brown from Wahroonga, Australia lives in Costa Mesa, -California and drives a Lola similar to Jones' but- entered by the Belgian Count Rudy Van Der Stratten. Brown's VDS Lola won at Watkins Gien and has one second and two third place finishes to its credit. Californians Folîmer of Huntington Harbour and Forbes-Robinson of La Crescenta are the only other drivers to have win a Can-Amn s0 far this season. Folîmer, himself the only former Can- Am Champion (1972) stili active in the series for wide-bodied sports cars, drives a modified Lola called a Prophet while Forbes- Robinson's Lola special is called a Spyder and is backed by film star Paul Newman. Joining Lola-driving AI Holbert of Warrington, Pennsyivania in the brides- maid but not bride category are such names as Grand Prix driver Jean-Pierre Jarier of Paris, France who drives a Shadow, ,another expatriate Australian from Caifornia, Vern Schuppan who drives an Australian-built Elfin and Floridian John Gunn in a Loha. She's been a talk show hostess and the manager of an exclusive gift boutique. She's a perfectionist in the kitchen and her own sensational cooking made many of her 36 years miserable. Judy Kennedy has been overweight most of her life, at one point up to 90 pounds. The results wilh be on display at the C.N.E. every day at the Better Living Centre's A & P Theatre from 6-7 p.m. August 16-September 4, when Judy Kennedy introduced the Weight Watchers "Fun with Food" Show. Jd Today, at 112 pounds, Jd has a lot going for her. She says that "Fun with Food" has a point to prove. "I would spend hours in the kitchen preparing gourmet meals and every minute I spent there meant more nibbles and tastes. With Weight Watchers, I dîscover- ed so many other things to do with my life. I just didn't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen any more. On the Weight Watchers Program, g ood food can be quick, and fun to prepare." Judy was addicted to too much food from the age of three. But it had to be good. Her mother, who was French, was a superb cook, and Judy's discerning tastes were developed early. "Every day, there were three wel-balanced meals on the table. " When my third child was 18 months old, I weighed 200 pounds. I took appetite suppressants and ended up in the hospital.", Judy joined and re-joined weight Watchers five times. The hast time, in 1974, she dedicated herself to proving that Weight Watchers would not work for ber. Defiantly, she followed the program. scrupulously. She found out two things. First, it worked. July lost the first 40 pounds în 16 weeks, and has lost a total of 90 pounds. Secondly, she re-dis- covered an old friend-cooking. "Food stopped being my enemy. My favourite meals are stihi Weight Watchers Program meals. " "A doctor made me see that my weight problems were my own fault. Since that day, I have folhowed the principles of Dr. Richard B. Stuart (psychological Director and Director of Research of Weight Watchers International) as outlined in the Weight Watchers Personal Action Plan to keep my weight off." ' I "s no secret. I've ahways enjoyed food and cooking. I still1 do, as much as ever, but in the right amounts and with my behaviour under my control. Weight Watchers bas given me true freedom."l C.N.E.
