He added that hie hoped this meeting would become an annual event when members and visitoirs can get together to discuss ail aspects of flower growing. Mrs. B. Barnes then wel- comed ail to lier home and went on to introduce the first guest of the day, Mrs. Winnie Diiling of Bowmanviile. Mrs. Diling aimed hier remarks at ail would-be arrangers and mentioned the new termi used for hier work-it is Flower Design. The main problemn that faces people when they begin to design Giadiolus bouquets is to keep the bouquet upright and together. Like cooking a chieken, Mrs. Dilling said "Aiways start with a good pot"'. Then use oasis, pin boiders and chicken wire with either the wire or pin holders preferred for such heavy blooms as Gladiolus. Mrs. Dilling warns against using too much material and too many biossoms in a design. She advises ail wbo wîsh to become flower design- ers to keep their bouquets simple. She commented that the taliest bloom of the design sbould be 1 and 1/ times tghe iength or height of the container to be used. And in demonstrating several de- signs, those present witnessed Mrs. Diiing as she actually measured hier gladiolus with the container. She demonstrated a Tri- angle Design, a Hogarth Design and three of the suggested designs from this year's prize iist, "Solo" , "Domino" and "By the Sea". Each floral piece was very attractive and Mrs. Dilling's comments were indeed in- teresting and beipful. Mrs. Killeen thanked Mrs. Diiiing and presented hier with a small gift on behaîf of the Society. The minutes of the iast meeting were read and appro- ved and a -short business period followed when the Treasurer's Report was accepted and the August Show on August l2th was outlined. Mr. Deeley then cailed on Wm. Crowley of Newmarket who gave fine advice to al growers who would hope to show their glads at a fair or in local flower shows. Bill asked growers to check their bloom about a week ahead of the show and gentiy pusb al florets forward at that tîme. Fhowers should be cut early enougb to aiiow spikes to open in doors to retain true color. Side shoots must be removed and florets must be about haîf open with the rest showing color and green tips. The spike must be straight and in proportion with at ieast 20 bs on large spikes and at least 18 on pixiolas or minia- tures.
