D evelopment's Fate Hangs On Staff's Ability to Revamp The fate of the development of land at the north-west corner of Waverley Road and Highway 401 hangs on whether or not the town's planning department revamp its rec- omimendations to theplanning committee. At last Tuesday night's meeting, Henry Joseph, of A.E. In its original plan, the investment firm foresaw a shopping centre, a large botel, light industry, an office com- plex, and possibly a new town hall for Newcastle. At the time of the original presentation, the planning director, Leslie Kristof, said that to locate the town hall in that area would be suicidai. He did not comment on the rest of the idea at the time althougb he expressed scepticism at the prospects of making the hôtel economical- ly viable. "We believe that there is no need for a community com- mercial shopping facility and we also believe that there is no justification for a neigbbour- bood commercial facility in this area," read the report. "Commercial development should be limited to a maxi- mum of four acres and should only provide 'services ancil- lary to industria] development which may subsequently occur to the west of the site." On the matter of tbe botel, the report stated the town's staff felt this to be a long term proposaI that would take 10-15 years to develop. Staff recom- mended the hotel not be developed in the proposed location but a motor hotel witb approximately 40 units sbould 'Confederation Establled Head Office, 187'1 L~iIC TORONTO. Association..
