10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 16, 1978 Secti OïBITUARY STELLA BENNETT Miss Stella Bennett died 'n Part Hope and District Hospi- talinii the early hours of Tuesday, July 18, 1978. She was born in Hamilton town- ship on June 23rd, 1887, daughter of Paul Bennett and bis wife Pauline Jacobs Greenaway. Stella attended elementary and high school i ,Port Hope, graduating in 1907 with honaurs in every subject receiving, what was called at that time Jr. Matriculatian or entrance ta teachers' training, certificate. She attended the tbree month's course ini the model sehool in Cobourg that fail and in January 1908, accepted a position in the school at Centreville, where she remained until June. In September she was engaged at the Dale School and after eig there for a year, being drive ack and forth daily by horse and buggy, she entered Peterborough normal school. She graduated at Easter with the high standing students. She was contacted at hoe by phone by the Peter- brough schoo board and began teaching there in the fali of 1910 and spent the next 40 years in schools there, retiring in 1951. During those years she attended summer school at Sundridge and re- ceived bier first class certifi- cate. She was a supervising teacher for students in train- ing and was sa successful in ber techniques in primary reading that a master from the normal scbool came ta bier classroom ta observe bier methods. While there she participated in the work of Grace Cburcb were she taugbit Sunday School and shared in the projects, plays, and ther activities of the young peaples' group. During the war1 years she acted as warden of the YWCA where she lived; was active witb the Red Crass and ail work which pramoted the war effort. She was wardrobe mistress for the "Little Theatre Group" dir 'ected by Robertson Davies; she taught English ta new Canadians and with al this activity took -part in several sparts. Shie was a member of the Metbodist' Church from an early age, and later of the United Cburcb. After retirement ta Port Hope she tranisferred bier services ta the local Red Cross, Cancer Society, Mor- risb Womnen's Inistitute, Churcb WA. and WMS, being the, latter's president at the thime of amnalgamation in 1962, and served on the executive af the Cobourg Preshyterial. She was a membe-r of the East Durhami Historical Society, Willow Beach Naturalists, Horticultural Society and served with the Golden Plow. Here for many years she did all the puirchasing for the cart of fruit and notions which she manned with a belper once a week tbrougbout the whole building. Being a member, meant ta Stella a commitment ta go the second mile in ail the work of eachýl one. She spent ber summers at bier cottage at Willow Beach where it was a centre of social times for friends near and far, and the scene of many happy parties for the children of ber own family and friends.
