FLASHBACK - 25 YEARS AGO - The bowling team of Bob Duff, Alan Densem, Fred Cole and Doug Carter, skip, won two of their three games at the General Motors Gold Cup tournament heid in Oshawa on last Wednesday. A second team from Bowmanvilie, Clarence Oke, Bill Thickson, Owen Nicholas and Walton Pascoe, skip, won one of three games. A Toronto team eventually was declared winner of the tournament. 400 bowlers participated from as far away as California. FLASHBACK - 10 YEARS AGO - In the exhibition soccer game Saturday, at Courtice, between Toronto Rangers and Darlington Al Stars, Ray Preston was the lone scorer for the Al-stars. Rangers won 3 -1. ALL FINISHED - Bowmanville Senior Merchants are through for the year, after losing to Whitb last week in the piayoffs in Whitby, but they have had a good year, considering the number of young players who still lack experience. Better luck next year. KEEN RIVALRY - That series between New- castle Lakers and Kendal Eagles was a tight one that brought out the fans. Both teams play- ed excellent bail and either team could have won. Next year, the rivalry should be even more intense. Bail fans will be looking forward to it. COME SECOND - Legion Branch 178's Golf Team piayed in the District Finals in Marysviile on Saturday and came very close to winning but had to be satisfied with second place. Bellevilleé won the event. However, Bowmanvilie will take part in the Ontario finals at Chatham. The team included Bruce Welsh,, Lou Welsh, Maxie Yourth and Darryl Hunt. GOOD BOWLING - Bowmanville's Lawn Bowling Club has had one of its best years in some time with a growing list of interested A members and some excellent tournaments. PORT COLBORNE - was the scene of the Ontario Assistant Prof essional Champion- ship Tournament, recently, consisting of 54 holes of play. Placing first was Doug Wilson, of Gait, second Paul Kennedy, Brampton, and third, Dudley Jones, Lamibton, Bruce Welsh, O)ýhawa, fourth. Seven golfers tied for fifth. The top ten will compete in the Canadian Assistant Professional Championship, Septem- ber il - 15 at Islesmere Golf Club, Montreal. HATS-OFF - to the Pine Ridge Corvette Club who took 15 boys, who are under the care of the Chldren's Aid Society, for a 30 -35 mile ride in their cars, yesterday, Tuesday, returning to Camp Samac in the evening for an evening campfire. The boys aged il - 17 are taking part in a summer 'program at Camp Samac. ONTARIO - wrist wrestling championships WilI be held Saturday, August 26th in Oshawa, and will be sponsored by the Carling O'Keefe Company. There will be four divisions for men, and probably one for women. The men's four divisions includes flyweight up to 150 lbs., lightweight 150 - 175, middleweight 170 - 200 and heavyweight over 200. BMBA DRAW - Bowmanvilie Minor Basebal Association annual draw for $500.00 was held at the Br. 178 Legion picnic on Sunday, August 2th. This year's winner is E. Rozema, 46 Mill Lane, Bowmanviiie. TOM WREGGIT - scored two touchdowns in- the home opener game for the Oshawa Hawkeyes Football team, on Sunday, against Scarborough Rams. Dropping their season opener in Ottawa recently, the Hawkeyes defeated the Rams 39 -28. Kendal Takes Se ries from Newcastle Firemen Win Jaycees Lobb Bail Trophy Bowmanville firemen showed they can play bail as well as battie blazes on Friday night at Memorial Park when they won the Jaycees Loblb Bal Tournament. In the first game they defeated the Jaycees 10-7, the Legion won their game with Kinsmen 12 -8, and in the final, the firemen won a close 7 -6 game with the Legion. Kendai Eagies won their series with Newcastle Lakers on Sunday in Kendal with a 5 - 2 victory, but it wasn't easy. In the ninth on Saturday, they were iosing 6 -5 and appeared to be almost out of it. John Robinson hit a long one to centre that was aimost, caught, but not quite, to p ut him on second. Pitcher Eric "Moose' Moore slugged one over the lef t field fence to score two. He is shown here romping home with a big smile on his face. The Lakers couldn't score in their haîf of the inning. On Sunday,, before the largest crowd of the season, Kendal took the game quite handily for a real upset because until recently the newly formed Lakers were downing them quite regularly. Bowmanville led the game 1-O after their first bats, only to have Wbiby tie the score in tbe bottom of tbe primary inning. Bowmanville came back to lead again 2-1 in the third inning, only to have wbitby tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Momorial Park Ail Star Tykes Ousted from Playoffs by Whitby After winning over Belle- ville in earlier playoff action, Bowmanville Memorial Park Tyke Ail Stars fînisbed their season on Friday evening against Whitby at Soper Creek Park. The visiting Whitby team were the winners in the E.O.B.A. finals, two games to none. Wbitby struck in their first at bat witb two runs then went on to score one in the third, two in the fourtb, three in the fifth and one in the final seventh inning. Bowman- ville's Chris Lee allowed only seven hits. ' Bowmanville Memorial Park Tykes came back in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead on bits by Brad Bamsey, Alan Ulricb, Brian Heard ýand Bruce Cooke. In the third inning Bowman- ville opened up a 6-3 lead. Pbilip Bird opened witb a walk, stole second and went to third on an error to Whitby wbo mishandled a hot shot by Pierre St. Amand. Both scored on pitcher Chris Lee's single and Brad Bamsev's double. Alan Ulricb found a pitcb, he liked and singled to score Chris Lee. Memorial Park scored a run in the 4th on singles by Pierre St. Amand and pitcher Chris Lee. Hughes, who, pitcbed both wins against- Bowmanvillle, closed off the rest of the game through the 5tb, 6tb and 7th innings by giving up just one bit. That to Bruce Cooke who bas been bitting very well in tbe playoffs. Bowmanville bad 9 bits in the game. The Bowmanville All Stars treated a good crowd to a basebail rarity in tbe 5th inning. With Wbitby baving runners on first and second and nobody out, tbe Bowman- ville team pulled off a solid triple play that looked as good as any seen on Monday might baseball. Ginn, of Whitby, bit a line shot to the right side and Bowmanville's first baseman, Pierre St. Amand, jumped bigh to snag it. He moved quickly to first base, catching the runner off first for the second out then threw quickly to short stop Brad Bamsey, who, was covering second, catcbing the other Whitby runner off the bag for the third out.
