The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 23, 1978 5 Gardeners Get Together for Newcastle, Horticultural Show Gardeners sent 234 exhibits to the annual flower and vegetable show sponsored by the Newcastle Horti- cultural Society in Newcastle Village last week. The show was held Thursday, August 17, at the Newcastle Village Hall. Over 100 gardeners are members of the Newcastle Horticultural Society but not ahl of them were represented at last week's show. Kileen The Durham Region Gladio- lus and Dahlia Society's Show at Memorial Park Clubhouse was held on Saturday, August l2th. This was a splendid show with 237 entries by 21 exhibit- ors. The blooms were of excellent quality - dlean and free from disease. Both the specimen classes and the interesting designs were at- tractively displayed. Mrs. Bertha Barnes was Show Chairman and the jud- ges were Mr. Len Butt, Huttonville and Mrs. Dorothy Sandford. Oshawa. At the conclusion of the show, Steve Liptay, World Famous Auctioneer, did an excellent job of selling the blooms to the many customers and inso doing realized a tidy sum for the Society. She had the most points for flowers in the show. With her, at the left of the photo, is Margery Freethy,' President of the Newcastle Horticultural Society. Second place in the flower category was a tie between Margery Freethy and Rana Sineau. In third place was George Buckley and Louise Jose took fourth place. In the vegetable section, first prize went to Rana Sineau. Second was Candy Storks and third was Margery Freethy.
