Farmer, Forest Technician They came from Cavan, Port Hope, Lindsay, Seagrave, Uxbridge, Oshawa, Peterborough, Bowmanville, Toronto and many other communities. Each with the samne burning desire - obtain a oodlot. September.9th, 1978 dawned bright and crisp, with just enough nip in the air to make a crackling wood fire very appealing. Thoughts of harvesting firewood must have been equally appealing as. more than 600 people arrived at the Ganaraska Forest Headquarters for our fuelwood sale. one hundred and twenty- five blocks approximately one half acre in size were up for sale. The blocks were marked for a fuelwood ceut and each contained an average of 3 - 4 cords of good hardwood fuel. The sale was rua on a lottery basis. Each eligible (over 18 years old) arrivee was given a numbered ticket; if and when that ticket number was drawn the holder was entitled to puchs a block -of marked stnigfuelwood. The volume of wood marked for cutting in each block was estimated at the time of marking. The selling price worked out ta approximately $5.00 per full cord (128 cu. ft.) The ladies group of the local church set up a refreshment booth, on the sale site, and sold hot dogs, coffee, donuts and homemnade pie to the gathering crowd. Large quantities of these delicious items were consumed by the anxious, hopeful fuelwood buyers as they waited for their number to be drawn. The purpose of the sale was severalfold, Our prime objective being improvement of the hardwood stands involved. We alsa wanted to meet some of the ever increasing demand for good uality fuelwood. Thirdly we esired to keep our expenditure to a minimum. With this fuelwood sale we should meet ail of our objectives: Once the marked trees have been removed, we will have an uplands hardwood stand that has been released and improved. At least 125 people will have a fuelwood supply in their possession and we will have spent little money in the process. This is the third fuelwood xlethat the Lindsay District of thie Ontario Ministry of Naturai Resources has completed on the Ganaraska Agreement Forest area.
