10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October_18, 1978 Section Two, The regular meeting of Bowmanville W.I. met on Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. in Trinity Church Hall. President Mrs. Twist opened the, meeting. Mrs. Mutton was our pianist in the absence of Mrs. Amacher. Plans were made for the meeting with Maple Grove, Oct. 16, 8 p.m. and the Fun Fair at Newtonvile, Oct. 18. The short course on Needle- point is on Oct. 10-11, at Agricultural Building in BowmanviHle. Mrs. Brine and Mrs. Aider will attend. The roil caîl "Name a Floral Emblem of a Province in Canada. Tell something of it." This was well answered by 24 members and was very interesting. Tbe themne of the program was Education and Cultural Activities. Mrs. C. Bell introduced Bey of Bev's Floral Creations. Wile speaking she made a single and thanksgiving centre-piece; a corsage and a dried flower arrangement. These were won by Mrs. Perfect, Mrs. Twist, Mrs. A.E. Billet and Mrs. Bragg. We enjoyed this very much, noting the deftness of ber hands in working so quickly. The motto - "Stop! Look! Listen! I-t's not a car. It's a bird, Appreciate Nature" was most capably given by Mrs. Perfect. Telling-us not to be in such a hurry and to observe the beauty of nature around us. Ending it, with a sing-song, one song for each season. A.W.I. Executive wlll meet at Mrs. T. Buttery's on Oct. 30, at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Twist expressed thanks to all participants and closed by ahl singing, God Save the Queen. A social haîf hour followed. SaDlem U.C.W. N4ews, The Salem branch of St. Paul's U.C.W. met in the church on October the llth at 8 p.m. Group No. 1 was in charge of the meeting. The theme of the evening was "Tbanksgiving" and Mrs. Bessie Welsh opened the- devotional period with a cali to worship, in the form of a Thanksgiving message. Hymn No. 579 was sung. Mrs. Ruby Shackleton had the' bible reading from Ephesians 5, verses 11-20. Mrs. Welsh gave the meditation,- which was also on being thankful for the many blessings we take for granted i this country. Hyn No. 577 was sung and devotional ended with a prayer by Mrs. Welsb. Mrs. June Marchant gave a reading by Gordon Greene, on "D)on't forget, Thanksgiving, about a period in bis boyhood, wbere a rabbit and some turnips were their only, ingredients for a feast, but forý wicb they ahi gave sincere tbanks. Mrs. Ruby Shackleton had a reading from Mandate. The devotional closed by a prayer by Mrs. Welsh, wbo afterwards conducted a contest on bibical people. Unit leader Mrs. Iva Twist conducted the business and Mrs. Audrey Shirk read the minutes of the last meeting. The presbyterial meeting was aninounced for Oct. l6th in Hampton and the participation bazaar on the l9th. Plans were made for our part in the pot luck supper and program for the general meeting 'in St. Paul's on tbe l7th. and for two dinners latel' in the month. Mrs. Sam Buttery gave a treasurer's report and the business losed with tbe benediction. The group ini charge served aq dehèiic1ilnch of pumpkin General Motors Choir, Ilarion Ukranian Dance Ensemble, Loreley Folk Singers and Dancers, Oshawa Barber- shoppers and Sweet Adelînes, andf the Oshawa Choral Society. Tickets are $2.50 and all proceeds will go to the Christmas Seal Chmpaign, which funds research into respiratory diseases, and also provides such local community programs as this summier's Day Camp for asthmatic eilîdren at Camp Samac, Better Breathing Courses for emphysema and chronic bronchitis patients, Smnoking Withdrawal Clînics and free film and lterature services, Tickets are available from Information Oshawa, or direct from Durham Region Lung Association by callîng 723-3151.
