Young Pear Picker The operators of Bowman- ville's dial-a-bus service are hoping that more people get to know about the regular routes they are running through the town. Tom Vanderende of Bow- manville Taxi explained last week that the company has been running a Monday-to- Frîday bus line through Bow- manville between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The bus service uses a blue and white 12-passenger mini- bus which makes a complete circuit through Bowmanville every hour. Beginning downtown, the dial-a -bus travels into the southwestern Waverley Gardens area. It then travels northward into northe rn Bow- manville and completes its run by covering the south Five-year-oldI Tara Snaw of Bowmanville is holding a basket of deliejous pears she and her parentspicked on Saturday afternoon at Peter Newell's orchard on Bennett Road. Quite a few people have taken advantage of Mr. Newell's generosity in inviting people to corne and pick the pears rather than letting thern rot. Capt. David Le-wis of the Salvation Arrny has been ma--king frequent visits to the orchard also because Mr. Newell suggested that instead of pickers trying to pay hirn, they rnight make a donation to the Army. You can catch the bus along its regular route (a map of the route is available from Bow- manville Taxi) or you can dial the bus. For an extra 25 cent fare the driver wîll leave his regular route and pick you up or drop you off at your front door. The bus service has been operating for about three weeks now and although some people are using the bus there are not a large number. of passengers taking advantage of it so far. Twenty-five persons used the dial-a-bus during one busy day last week. However, Mr. Vanderende says he needs 60 to 70 passengers to make the service work. He explains that he intends to use the bus until the end of the year to see if business will pick up. "If people areni't going to make use of it, they're cutting their own throats," he explains. He pointed out that if bus service is discontinued it is not likely that another service will be operated in the town for some time. The municipality ran a trial bus service about one year ago but it was discontinued after a lack of passengers was report- ed. Unlike the town's transit system, Mr. Vanderende explains that his bus service operates completely as a free enterprise. The fare is 50 cents for a regular trip and home pick-up for persons who dial the bus is available for an extra 25 cents. Customers are requested to dial the bus 10 minutes in advance for home pick-up. The phone number is 623-4424. CACHOU l Farrah Fawcett HAIR SPRAY 100 MI.
