The Durham Region's economic mission overseas has resulted in six prospective industrial clients, according to a report from Durham Region Chairman Walter Beath. Mr. Beath said last week in a report to Regional Council that approximately 150 con- tracts were made with over- seas business enterprises during the industrial promo- tion tour. The tour took place in May of this year and Regional Chairman Walter Beath, two development officials and the commissioner of planning and development were included in the trip. England, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark and the Netherlands were the countries included in the tour. In his observations on the European tour, Mr. Beath said that in the future it might be more beneficial to have just two members of regional staff visit overseas instead of a group. He added that the Durham Region should consider visit- ing some countries in addition to the ones already visited during May "I feel quite strongly that we should esta- blish some contacts in other parts of Europe that could be of specific interest to Canada," Mr. Beath said. "The Netherlands and Scandinavia are two areas of Europe that hold Canada in high regard and could provide products and expertise bene- ficial to both sides." Mr. Beath's report noted that total cost of transporta- tion and accomodation during the regional tour was $15,522. The cost of producing other assorted brochures, and advertising was $43,584. Brochures promoting the Durham Region were produc- ed in English, French, German and Italian. Total cost of the industrial promo- tion program is funded 75 per cent by the Province of Ontario and 25 per cent by the Region.
