Thamn, Director of Education Valedictory: Annette Taylor Cnbe Useful With sumimer over and fal] here, many of us are faced with the annual problem of, raking, collecting and disposing of leaves. This year. rather than putting the leaveç in green garbage bags and leaving them for the garbage collector ta take ta the landfill site, consider some other uses. Leaves are a valuable fertilizer material rich in minerais, including calcium magnesîum, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They can be used as mulqh (a layer of material placed on the soul surface ta conservýe maîsture, hold down weeds and ultimately, improve the sali) around permanent plants - fruit trees, blueberry bushes, raspberries, etc. They are especially' valuable when placed around acid-loving plants, such as azalea, rhododendron and hollies. in winter, leaves can be used ta caver strawberries; saving the expense of buying straw. Another use would be for compost. Compost is decayed plant and animal material which can be spread on your garden in place of chemical fertilizers and grawth stimulators. However, when using leaves for compost, it is important ta add other green material, such as weeds and lawn clippings, sa it will flot pack and impede. The best practic e is to place the leaves in shalaw piles, gaing over them with the pawer mawer, shredding themn fine before adding ta the compost heap. If you fallow the above advice and find you stili have tao many leaves, bag them up and take them to the Community Garden lots on the east side of the Training Schoal. Here they will be used in the garden plats as compost. Residents in the community who do nat have access ta their awn leaves and would like ta use them, may came ta the garden plots and take what they can use. urne r when YOD are a RED C Ê'oROSS Blood Donor Drum Duty Wins Over Fire Fighting
