The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 25, 1978 7 Thurs5day Night Hockey ED ZUPANIC - a grade 12, student at Courtice Secondary School and Glenn Nolan, a grade il student at Anderson Collegiate, Whitby were in St. John's, Nfld. on the weekend competing in the Canadian Cadet Judo championship with the Ontario provincial team. WaIter Frank Toros Loge to Markham in 3 to i Encouâter 1 By Joe Kennett It seems that this Toro teamn has, ail the bad luck of havinig pôor officiais for their gamfes as this pair from, Oshawa cç,uld not see any infractions b ' the Markham team, only the Toros. The' Toros only picked Up three penalties but these three were of the cheap variety, especially the one to Gordie Rogers as he waÈ being hooked ail the way in fr'om the blue uine. But they gave Gordie a penalty for high sticking. The first period f'eatured good, hard skating by both teams and some very good goaltending by Darip Shackei- ton of Markham and Donny Hayes for Bowmarnville. The Toros opened the scor- ing on a goal by Scott Heard assisted by Deryk Clark and Roger Hornsby at the 13.51 mark of the second period. Markham tied the first game from a scramble in front of the Bowmanville net when Jason Adamson scored from Mike Hunter at the 14.16 mark. Markham went ahead at the 10.35 mark of the third period when Paul Elliott scored from Bruce Paterson. With only 1.46 ieft in the game and the Toros putting on pressure the officiai decided to make it a littie more competitive for the Toros when they gave the Toros two penalties at the same time,, thus killing any chance the Toros may have had to tie the game. With just 32 seconds left in the. game. Markhamn scored their third goal of the contest. The goal was scored by Don Ritchie. Congratulations should go to goaltender Donny Hayes who played superbly in the Bow- manville goal. The Toros' next home game will be on Sat., Oct. 28, at the Darlington Sports Centre at 6 p.m. when Cobourg will be the opposition. Su"ptolean MnrBntm Winless After Four Games The young hockey season is underway and so far the Septo Clean Minor Bantams have played 4 games, winning 0, losing 3, and tying another. The team began pla-y on Saturday, Sept. 30j, at the Bowmanviile Memoriai Arena with Bowmanvilie hosting Oshawa in low-scoring affair, Oshawa taking it by a 2 - 1 count. After a scoreless first period Shaughn Houston put Bowmanville ahead assisted by Grant Gibson. The time was 1:20. But the lead was very short-lived as just 14 seconds later Ken Spohn tied it for Oshawa. After 2 periods it was 1 - 1. But Oshawa wasted no time in taking the lead when at 1: 12 of the 3rd period Wade Tedren scored the winner for the visitors. Bow- manville took 5 penalties to Oshawa's 2 (ail as minors). t. was a penalty that sunk the Toros in this one. As the winner was on a powerplay goal for Oshawa. Game 2 - Toros - 0, Ajax 4 Bowmanville's first road game of the year was in Ajax. With Ajax whitewashing the Toros 4-0. This was a very rough game as the referees assessed a total of 19 penal- ties. Bowmanville took 10, Ajax 9, Bowmanville had 1 - 5 minute penalty. While Ajax had 1 - 20 minute misconduet plus 2 double minors. Gamne 3 - Toros - 3, Oshawa 3 The Toros were looking for some revenge here against the team who beat them before but it was not to be as the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Thus Bowmanville gained their first point of the year. Bowmanville's 3 goals were scored in either the 2nd or 3rd perîods after Oshawa jumped into a 1-0 lead in the second, first period was scoreiess, Tim Preston tied it for Bowmanville, from Stephen Taylor and Shaughn Houston. Second veriod ends 1-1. In the INFLATION FIGHTER EVERY WEDNESDAY; FROM Tl,19SUIVI9T WHY NOT A PIZZA FOR LUNCH? WE START COOKING AT 10:30 ar. SPECIAL 3rd Bowmanviile jumped into a 3-1 advantage as Don Dargie from Marty Grubb and Steven Allen and Troy Wood from Ron Hopcrof t and Captain Glenn German at 4:27 and 2:52 respectively. Oshawa got back inito the picture wt 1:42 left. But the backbreak- er for the Toros came with only :42,seconds left as Jose Lafarga gave Oshawa the tie. NOTES - A good Toro effort almost paid off in a victory. Gaine 4 - Offence O.K., Defence? Once again thiswas a home game for the Toros. Bowman- ville lead by Shaughn Houston (assisted by Dan Richie), Don Daigle (from Steven Allen, Shaughn Houston) and Mike Glass (Glenn Mathews and Dan Richie). The Toros took i 3-2 lead with 12:55 minutes left to play. But it turned out to be 13 long minutes as Cobourg came up with 3 unanswered goals at 8:15, 3:28, and with 2:45 left to give Cobourg a win over Bowmanville. NOTES - The Toros looked very scrambly defensively in this one, as they just seemed to be running around in their own end, not mentioning the numerous breakaways the Cobourg Club had. When the defence is good and the offence is going the Toros become a very tough team to beat. S"t,. Commercial Hockey ýLoague In the opening game of the morning Spencer's Realtors finally got their very first win of the season, and it couldn't have come at a, more appropriate time, as their sponsor Roly Spencer just came home from hospital. At this- time- I and ail other members of the hockey execu- tive, and ail the other teams and their personnel wish Roly a very speedy recovery. The game was a high scoring duel, with Spencers coming through wîth the winning goal in the last minute and haif of the thîrd period. The hero of that goal was Glen Rice and other goal scorers were D. Colwell, Hooper, Bowan, Howes, and Parker who each had one, with assists going to Parker with 2, J. Knowlan, Bowan, Hooper and Ormiston, each with one. The Cowan-Pontiac squad were very persistent through- out this whole game, because they were neyer out of reach of wînning it, but Spencer's got the ail important goal and won it by a score of 6 - 5. Scoring for Cowans, Abreght with three, Shackelton and Clarke with one each. Assists went to Shackeiton, Taylor, Brown, Donaghue, Welsh, Bradley and Little. Rest assured everyone the next contest between these two will be a real thriller. Firths Beat Franks The second game of the morning found Frank's Coach John Osborne very upset with his club by dropping this game by a one sided score of 6-2. With Firths it was just an al out effort by every team member, and with Mike Willoughby having an easy time between the posts. To prove it was a real team effort everybody had a share in the scoring, goals were scored-by John Colwell, Radimaher, Wilson, Hewer, Corneil and Vivian with assists going to Corneli with 2, Humenick with 2, Baker, J. Colweil and Wilson with one each. As for Frank's this was just a bad game ail around for them, they tried everything but nothing worked to their advantage and as a resuit they only notched two goals. They were by that tough ail round player Jim Brooks with one, and that very fast skating, hustling Boyd Knox with one. Assists went to Prentice with two, and Russell and Randeli with one each.
