1Section Two The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville.Nvebr,198 3 Openlu St. Step hen 's Separate Scho ol in .Waverley Area The new St. Stephen's Separate School in the Waverley Road area was officially opened on Sunday afternoon, with the auditorium packed for the occasion. In fact, there were so many adults that there was no room for most of the students. The modern structure was opened in September but is already so crowded that a portable has been added to take care of the overflow. The program included brief speeches by visiting dignitaries and board trustees as well as remarks by the school's principal. Both the St. Stephen's and St. Joseph's choirs provided vocal selections. Taking part in the traditional key ceremony at the conclusion of the program were from left to right, W. Golding, Principal Gutteridge, F. G. Leahy and W. Noble. All of the speakers offered congratulations to those who had played a part in the school's planging and construction and Principal Gutteridge was given a standing ovation by the audience for the part he has played in the project. His address is carried in full on this page. Bishop J. L. Doyle Platform guests included from left to right, W. Golding, the builder; W. Noble, the architect; His Worship Mayor G. Rickard, His Excellency, Most Reverend J. L. Doyle; Principal R. P. Gutteridge, L. A, Swatridge, area Liaison officer with the Ministry of Education and a former teacher at BHS; -S. Cureatz, MPP Durham East; Board Chairman F. G. Leahy, Reverend F. Mihelic and School Trustee D. Bouttell who was Master of Ceremonies. By Principal R. P. Gutteridge First of all, I would like to say how happy I am to be here as principal of this school, which I have been talking about and promising to you for the last 5-6 years. It should be understood that St. Stephen's is very much the child of St. Joseph's because it was the growth and successes of St. Joseph's that made possible the construction of this school. So it is important to remember the efforts of not only the Board members of the Four County Board and our local representative but also the local Bowmanville Separate School Board that existed before 1969. Through the years a bond of trust was built up between the parents and the school and between the board and the school. Because of this trust the staff have always gone far beyond the call of duty to create a school that both parents and board members alike would be very proud to say - this was their school. Thus we grew. In 1962 when the population of Bowmanville was about half its present population, St. Joseph's opened and had about 120 students; by 1966 it doubled to 265. Today our present enrolment is about five times the 1962 figure. So, growth has been a way of life i this area and in St. Joseph's and when you consider we did not have the facilities like this in the past, yet we grew. We grew because St. Joseph's was recognized as offering the students a high standard of education. We gave meaning to their lives as we taught the Catholic teachings as present- ed in the 'Come to the Father' series and we gave the students a place where a strong Christian atomosphere prevailed where both child and adult held a mutual respect for each other. I can honestly say I have always been confident that parents could enter the school as volunteers or interested people and that each and every child would show them the respect, they as adults, deserved. This atmosphere could not have developed without the strong parental support shown us and I thank you for this vote of confidence which ultimately led to the building of this school. I would like to thank the Ministry and the Board for the money to build this school; and thanks to the Architect, Wally Noble for a well designed school; Peter Roach and Dan Cowie and our Administrators for their ef- forts in having this school completed. And, Bill Golding of Tacher Enterprises who believed as I did that the school would be finished on time. He was the person that made it happen. When you consider the school was start- ed only in March, Wally, Dan Cowie, Bill. Golding, the con- tractor, their efforts fulfilled my promise to you that the school would be opened in September. For that I thank them. Generally, I would like to thank all those people whose efforts have led to the im- provement of Catholic Educa- tion in Bowmanville. Priests, parents, volunteers and others but most of all I must give the credit to my staff members both now and in the past for their extraordinary efforts in educating your children. Remember, parents, child- ren, teachers, principals, board mernbers, science, reli- gion classes, buildings, books, do not make a school. Mixing these together does not neces- sarily make a school. St. Stephen's has no tradi- tion but if each one of us work together towards a common goal of creating a school which symbolizes a spirit of love, quality education, and reli- gious growth, then the results of creating a strong Christian Community in this school will be far greater than the sum of all our efforts. This is a challenge not only to you but also to future students, par- ents and teachers who will be part of this school. But if past performance is any indication of your dedication I know St. Stephen's will be much more than just a great building.
