Ferndale lier days when lake freighters were regular cal- landed at the dock, took on an 8,000 ton load of lers at Port Darlington Harbor. Captain Heino Eespere of the S.S. Ferndale is welcomed ashore by John O. Down, St. Marys Director of Engineering and Research, at left, and J. Brian MacLean, Manager of Distribution at right. If the weather holds, there may be other loadings this year, otherwise it will be spring before the dock area will see more freighters calling. The new docking facility stretches out into the lake about 2,200 feet and eventually will include about 5,700 acres. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 22, 1978 15 Education withl TLerry Hawkins It often is, a problem for parents to get their sons and daughters off to school on time. Some people, -young or older, can jump out of bed at the crack of dawn and neyer ever are late for anything. But there are others who have an awful job waking up and getting going. At sehool, we treat lateness as a type ofabsence and keep track of it on a daily basis. We understand that anyone can sleep in or for some other reason can be late once in a while. llowever, if we notice any pattern of Iateness at ail, we talk to the studen- ts about it. As a resuit the number'of late students is quite minimal. Over the last few years I have jotted down some of the more interesting reasons ' why students say they have-been late for school. Let me share some of the more colourful ones with you. "Reasons for being late for School"' -I was late because 1 got held up getting a speeding ticket. - Mv ride izot here before I did. -My sunburn made me walk too slowly. -Mother drove me to school and we got stuck in our neighbour's garden. - 1 ripped my trousers and had to walk to school backwards. - My car broke down in the car wash. - An old lady ran over me on her bike and I had to help her fix it. - I had to get decorated for the formai dance. - My brother was late and I didn't think it would be nice manners to walk on ahead. - I got stuck in my locker. - I was late because our horses got loose. - I was late because our horses got loose again. - It was late because we were selling the horses. - I ran out of the house so fast 1 forgot some of my parts and had to go back and get them. - My water bed burst and I had to wait for my shoes to dry.
