The committee, composed of 17 parents, is unden tbe . ' leadership of principal Ed Taylor who bas had ex- penience with sucb groups at M. J. Hobbs Senior Publi School in Hampton. Heié broached tbe idea of fonming such a committee in New- castle, at the scbool's open bouse in the fali and asked interested parents to sign up. Other members wene per- sonaliy contacted by him. Mr. Taylor toid parents Monday night that tbe group would meet four times during the year and the purpose of these meetings would not be "to get the parents or get the teacher." They would provide an opportunity for frank ~ discussion about educational programns and school pohicy. He outlined some of tbe Ed Taylor, Principal objectives of the committee. One is to provide a direct means of communication between home and school. In a small community, he pointed mr M out, there is usually pienty of gossip circuiating about what D is going on at the scbool. In most cases. said Mr. Taylor, tbe information you get third- P band isn't realiy the way it is. The committee, at its meet- ON E QI ings, can hean what we're doing "right from the borse's moutb" and take the correct information back to the coin- munity. A second objective of the committee is to assist the school in making better deci- sions neganding educational policy and goals. Parents have a chance for input. But, Mr. Taylor stressed, their role is solely advisory. He and bis staff might not always do suggests. "But, I'd be a fol if I didn't shift a bit," lhe said. A third objective is simply to help one another for the sake of the children. Mr. Taylor said bie hopes parents ' will feel free to, pick up the Nwol 19 telephone or -drop in and see W n-$ 9 him whenever they have a__ problem. Mr. Taylor and Cathy Cronkwrigbt reviewed the phonics program at each grade level and some of the math program with the parents. Botb stressed that the child sbould be belped within tbe home. It was noted that the grade one teachers are send- ighome ganies, parents can, play with their cildren to help them witb their sounds. Mn. Taylor explained that in accordance with Ministry policy, the metric system is now the only one taugbt in the scboois. Some parents thought Ch Oic e the cbiidren shouid still be m taught some of the Imperial F abric s system since it is taking 50 a, R long to phase, it out. Others 0oW n'y argued that this wouid be tooN i confusing to the cbildnen.
