8 The Canradian Statesma n, i3owmanville, December 6, 1978 Section Tw Winter Omutings Plane Ini the Ganaraska Forest on the trails, no litterinig and no damaging the trees. The first program is scheduled for Sunday, December 17 at 2 p.m. Centre staff members will discuss the purchase and maintenance of cross country equipment. How to wax a ski, what to wear while skiing aad what to carry la a day pack will also be discussed. Safety The safety aspect of cross country skiiag is something many skiers overlook, believes Henderson. He says the majority of people dress too warmly for skiing. Over dressing causes the individual to perspire heavily which can lead to hypothermia - the lowering of the body core temperature. A 10 degree drop in the body's 37 degree celsius temperature can lead to death. Hypothermia is preceded by uncontrollable shivering, the loss of muscle control, the desire to sleep and finally a coma, says Henderson. Cross country skiers are advised to wear the layered look on the trails soeclothing can be added or taken off depending on weather condi- tions and the movement of the skier. Snowshoes A second program offçred on January 20 at 1 p.m. will introduce winter enthusiasts to the World of snowshoes. A, variety of snowshoes will be on hand for those who care to join the staff on a winter hike. Following pregrams include a three hour off-the-trail ski expedition and a loppet (non- skiers cali them races) for the entire family. The Ganaraska Forest Centre is located off County Road 9 mid-way between Kendal and Elizabethville. For more information contact the Ganaraska Forest Centre at 707-2721. ORONO Rob Henderson of the Ganaraska Forest Centre will be on hand Sunday, December 17 for a cross country ski clinic. The clinic will include present- ations on cross-country ski waxing, maintenance of equipment and the proper dress to wear. By Lynne Ainsworth Old man winter may not bé prepared for the start of the ski season, but the staff at the Ganaraska Forest Centre certainly are. Four wiater program~ desigaed to stimulate ai iaterest in winter events while stressing outdoor safety havo lieen planned by the Centre which is located northeast of )endal. Although there was barely enough snow on the ground to provide a thin covering over rocks and sticks last week, cross country skiers have already made a number of inquiries as to snow conditions at the Ganaraska Forest Centre. Last winter the Centre had soime 800 skiers using the four trails on good weekends. Staff memnber Rob Henderson expects the number of skiers to almost double this year. Three of the winter pro- grams will focus on the cross country skier whose numbers continue to grow because of the accessibility and cheap- ness of the sport. Cross country skiers can be outfitted with a pair of skis, boots, bindings and poles for under $100, whereas the downhill skier may spend $100 on boots alone. Courtesy Rules Henderson says the Centre hopes, to teach skiers the courtesy rules of skiing, something many skiers aren't aware of. Using courtesy in the out- doors involves treating fellow skiers and the environment with respect. "We want to show that skiers can participate la recreational activities without destroying the environment," says Henderson.
