1i h 'e Canadian Statesmnan. Bowmanville,Dc".ir 13. 1979 Section Twýo Education with Terry Hawkins1 There's a story of a man who was walking through the woods when he came upon a fellow sawing down a small tree. As the woodcutter seem- ed very busy, the man continued on his way without disturbing hirn. Half an hour later when he returned, he saw, that the woodcutter was stili sawing down the same small tree, so he asked why he didn't stop and sharpen his saw. The woodsman replied, "I can't stop and sharpen the saw, I'm- too busy cutting down this tree. " It often seems that we get so busy and rushing ln our work that we may flot -use our time wisely and as a resuit run out of time before our jobs are completed. Maybe we need to stop for a moment, assess what we are doing and as the woodsman should have done, "lsharpen the saw". Saving time is always a problem, but if one wants to there are ways it can be done. Hereare a few thougbts on the matter. The first thing one must do is grasp the concept of time. Time is a funny sort of thing. It's very fleeting and only controllable by one method. That method is by planning. Past time is gone forever and present time is here only for the moment. Future time can however be harnessed and used if it is planned. So that is what one must'do. Build a flexible schedule that pro- duces resuits, both for work and pleasure. For example a student can start to study 'for exams weeks ahead of the time they start. He can prepare review sheets or summarize bis notes for quick and easy studying. He or she is going to have to study sooner or later and it miZht as well be planned out and done in some useful, pleasant and control- led manner as compared to some desperate action a few days before exam day. By planning the studying, the student can include time for his favourite television pro- gram, his sports and the other activities and obligations he may bave. As a resuit he gets more done, has a sense of accomplishment and reduces the pressure on himself. Something else one can do to make better use of'time is to make certain he is doing things which really do need to be done. People constantly spend houx-s reading some- thing they should only scan for a few minutes. Others spend vast amounts of time writing at great lengtb when a simple note would do. It's a long time since I bave read a book that couldn't bave been condensed to a few chapters without losing much of the idea. If one examines their own tasks at home or work, it's usually not too long before they find something that is befing given a disproportionate amount of time when compared to the value. When you find a task worth doing or one which must be done, put a time limit on it. Meetings are notorious for consuming ahl the time alloted to them. If you run a meeting which normally takes two hours, knock a haîf hour or even an hour off and you will probably still accomplish just as much as before. The same applies to other tasks. Good bard work for baîf an bour will often produce a better out- corne than several hours of poking along. One final suggestion. If you really want to get a lot done, plan to do one thing.per day almost everytbing they want to do. A good lesson to learn early in life. ~Ieaps Our Reg.
