The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, December 20, 1978 9 Van Dyk's Defeat Lindsay Whitby, Lose By Don Welsh The Van Dyk Major Midgets played hosts to Port Hope on Dec. 13 and went down to an 8 to 6 defeat. The Realtors played down to Port Hope and there was little evidence of the skating and passing game that they executed so well in contalnng the league leading Bay Ridges team last week. It is to be hoped that the Bowmanville crew will soon begin to realize that they are most successful on the occasions when they' combine hustle with passing and heads up play making. Poor showings like this game against Port Hope are the consequences of a lack of hustle and poor play making. The Van Dyk goal scorers in this game were Rick Simpson (2), Randy MacDonald (2), Stan Greenham and Steve Braun. Assists'went to Brent Clemens (3), Rick Simpson (2), Stan Greenham (2), Randy Crossey (2), Darrell Goudy and Steve Braun. The Bowmanville power play was once again a big factor in their game as three of their six goals were scored on power plays. The fine play of Rick Simpson all night and the breakaway goal by Stan Greenham while the team was two men short were certainly two of the more positive aspects of the game for the local fans. On Saturday, Dec. 16 the Van Dyk Major Midgets travelled to Whitby and defeated their hosts by a score of 4 to1. The only goal of the first two periods was scored by the Realtors in the first minute of the game. Stan Greenham and Randy MacDonald had a two on one break and executed it to perfection. Stan carried the puck over the Whitby blue line and passed it to Randy who pulled the goalie before sliding the puck back to Stan who put it in the open side. At the end of the second period the score was still 1 to 0 for Bowman- ville. Early in the third period the realtors had another two on one break. This time Stan Greenham carried the puck in and used Chuck Welsh as a decoy while he picked his spot and beat the goalie for an unassisted marker. Terry Riggers gave Bowmanville a three goal bulge when he picked up the puck behind the Whitby net and with the goalie out of position skated out front and slipped it in. Rick to Port Hope Simpson earned an assist on this goal. Whitby-Brooklin got their only goal of the game when the Realtors got burned trying to kill a penalty with only one defenceman on the ice. Chuck Welsh scored the final goal of the game when he tucked in the rebound from Randy Crossey's point shot. Brent Clemens also got an assist on the goal. For the second game in a row the Van Dyk crew played down to their opponent's level. Once again the hustle and passing plays were conspi- cious by their absence. If the Realtors hope to be in contention in the Silver Stick playdowns next week they are going to have to get back to playing heads up hockey very quickly. On Sunday, Dec. 17 the Van Dyk crew journeyed to Lindsay to win their second game in as many nights. The Realtors took the lead with 4.41 left in the first period when Rick Simpson did a fine job of controlling the play in the Lindsay end until he could slip the puck back to Neil Jones who beat the goalie cleanly with his point shot. Less than a minute later Lindsay tied the score with a shot from the point while they enjoyed the man advantage. With 2.14 left in the first frame the Realtors again took the lead when Randy MacDonald tucked in the rebound from Kevin Noble's shot from the point. Neal Jones drew an assist on the play. All three first period markers were power play efforts. The Realtors increased their lead to two in the second period on a nice pass play from Neil Jones at point to Brent Cleiens on the goalie's left side to Chuck Welsh who put it behind the netminder on his right side. The two teams traded goals in the third period. Lindsay struck first on a 2 on 1 break that worked well as the Bowmanville players made only a minimal effort to get back and help out. The final goal of the game was scored when Terry Riggers carried the puck in over the Lindsay blue line then dropped it back to Rick Simpson who bulged the twine with a sizzling wrist shot to the top corner. The Van Dyk crew controlled most of the play but are still not doing a good enough job of head manning the puck when moving up the ice. Flying Dutchman Inn Win Two and Tie One On Sunday, Dec. 10 Flying Dutchman Motor Inn travelled to Peterborough to play their MacDonald's in a regular scheduled game. Peterborough's Dave Strick- land opened the scoring only to have Scott Hillier come back to tie it up with assists to Peter Herron and Ed Osborne. Peterborough scored the only 2 goals of the second to take the lead 3 - 1. In the 3rd Toros showed a little more effort with Scott Hillier scoring his second goal assisted by Chris Dyk and Ed Osborne. Scoring the tying goal was Barry Cullen after a pass from Bill Hogarth. Paul Adams played in net for Toros in this game. Flying Dutchman Motor Inn 7 Cobourg 2 At home on Monday Toros playing their 3rd game in as many nights played host to Cobourg in a lakeshore league game. Our Toros came our flying with Darcy Cummings scoring assisted by Barry Cullen and Bill Hogarth. Our next goal came on a good passing play from Brian Ruddy to Chris Dyck who skated behind Cobourg net and laid a pass to John Klompmaker in front, who drilled it home on a quick release. Toros third goal was a hard slap shot by Brad Clemens with assists to Ed Osborne and Steve Cary. Bowmanville made it 3-1 early in the second on an unassisted goal by Greg Patton. With good hustle and aggressive- ness our Toros took command of this game with John Klompmaker scoring his second goal assisted by Ed Osborne and Chris Dyck picking up their second assist. Flying Dutchman's next goal was Darcy Cummings scoring, his second of the game, assisted by Barry Cullen. With 3 minutes left in the second Rick Erwin blasted a hard shot to score from the point with Chris Dyck giving Rick the pass to give Chris his third assist of the game. In the third each team scored with Toros goal going to Steve Cary with assists to Brad Clemens and Mike Stocker. Coming up with some good saves and going all the way in Toros net was Mark Lee. Toros set a record and one to be proud of by only taking one penalty in this game. Flying Dutchman 5 Port Perry 1 Flying Dutchman Motor Inn played an exhibition game against Port Perry on Sat., Dec. 16 at D.S.C. Darcy Cummings scored the only goal of the first period with assists to Brad Clemens and Bill Hogarth. In the second Rick Erwin took a shot from the centre red line which slid under the Port Perry netminder to put Toros ahead 2 - 0. Toros next goal was scored unassisted also, as Ed Osborne picked his way toward Port's net and instead of going in front where all the traffic was he went behind and came around to the side to tuck it in. Port's Scott Wallace scored with 44 seconds left to end the second period at 3 - 1. In the third Chris Dyck picked up a rebound and lifted over a sprawling Port Perry netminder with assists to Scott Hillier and Steve Cary. Darcy Cummings tucked the puck in the open side of the net after takin a pass from John Klompmaker and Brad Clemens. At this time Flying Dutch- man Motor Inn's coach, manager-and players woûld like to wish their parents, sponsor and the staff of the Canadian Statesman a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. Goalies Hve Nightmares Septo Clean Minor Bantems Lose Two, Tie By Steve Samis The Septo Clean Minor Bantams' goalie must have had nightmares in the two of the three games the Toros played last week. On Friday, Dec. 8, the Toros travelled to Cobourg and ended up losing 8 - 1. Shaughn Houston (unassisted) scored the lone Toro goal in the game. Scott Bate went the whole game in the Toro net. On Saturday, Dec. 9 at Darlington Sports Complex it was the rematch between Bowmanville and Trenton. These two teams had played the week before in Trenton and the home team beat the Toros 6 - 1. So, the Toros were looking for some revenge in this one. The Toros played well enough to win and should have but a third period collapse proved the difference as Trenton squeezed out a 5 - 3 win. The Toros led 3 - 2 going into the third. After a good game against Trenton, everyone looked for a good outing from the locals against Whitby-Brooklin but this was not the case as the Toros came home downheart- ed after being bombed 9 - 1. B. W. held period leads of 1 - 0, and 6 - 0 and it was 9 - 0 until 4:05 were left in the game when Shaughn Houston ruined a Whitby shutout by scoring unassisted. Bill McArthur played the whole game in the Toro net. Bowmanville took 5 of 11 One Game minor penalties called. The Toros then had to regroup and come up big against Ajax in Ajax. And the Toros did come up big. Although they tied 2 - 2 it was an excellent game and a good team effort. Scott Bate looked much better in goal than he did against Cobourg, preserv- ing the tie with a great breakaway stop in the third period. Glen German from Ron Hopcroft gave Bowmanville the lead in the first but Dan Wiles tied it up before the period ended. The Toros went ahead . as Shaughn Houston scored at 12:50 from Marty Grub. The lead lasted until 12:50 of the third period until Lou Bozanis tied the score for Ajax. The shots on goal were Bowmanville 12, Ajax 20. Notes: But, don't let the shots fool you, the Toros played really well and the shuffling of lines seemed to pay off and maybe the Toros can pick up a win or two against their regional teams, Orono and Newcastle this week. D&R Sports On Nov. 18, 1978 the Toros travelled to Orono to play a very one sided game. The other team never was in the game from the start as we won 8-0 outshooting them 32 to 3. Sharing the shut out in net for Bowmanville were Teddy Groves and David Smith. Scoring for the Toros were Larry Perris (2), Brian Noble, Glen Campbell, Mike Gallant, Paul Stainton, Clíris Beck and Michael Houston. Gaining assists were Glen Campbell (4), Brian Noble (2), Michael Houston (2), Shawn Rekker (2), Bobby McArthur and Paul Stainton. Playing a strong game for the Toros were Glen Campbell, Paul Stainton and Mike Gallant. On Dec. 2, 1978 the Port Hope Major Atoms came to play, the local minor atoms handed them a 2-0 defeat out- shooting them 15-6. In the second period the Toros scored on a pretty goal by Paul Stainton, after Mike Gallant and Larry Per- ris passed him the puck to show positional play pays off around the net. In the third period Larry Perris scored unassisted. Gaining the shut out for the Toros was Teddy Groves. In this game Larry Perris and David Fairey played well. On Dec. 9, 1978 the Toros played host to Markham playing to a 2-2 tie. Both teams put on a fine show for the spectators as they are an even match for each other. The first two periods remained score- less until late in the second period when Chris Beck put on tie light for the Toros on a nice passing play of Brian Noble's and Kelly Armstrong. Early in the third period the Markham team tied it up but the Toros never gave up as Michael Houston stole the puck at our blue line and went down to score unassist- ed. The game remained ours until late in the third period THE BOWMANVILLE BUSINESS - Girl's Curling Club will host a Bonspiel at the Bow- manville Curling Club, on Saturday, January 27th, when various Business Girl's Clubs will compete. Spectators are welcome. MinorAtoms when Markham pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and scored with 8seconds re- maining. Playing a strong game for the Toros was the line of Chris Beck, Kelly Arm- strong and Brian Noble. We'll hold on to that win the next time we play Markham! On Dec. 16, 78 the Toros played host to the Newcastle Major Atoms defeating them 4-2 and outshooting them 22 to 9. The Toros continue to have success against these older teams mainly by determin- ation and playing as a team. They showed in this gafie that what they had been taught in the last couple of months paid off as they were passing the puck around with control. Scoring a perfect hat trick was Chris Beck on 2 unassisted goals and one with an assist to Mike Gallant. The other Toros marksman was David Fairey with Shawn Rekker getting the assist. The Toros defense played well this game consist- ing of Michael Houston, Shawn Rekker, Bobby Mc- Arthur and Barry Oliver. Although we are winning we really miss Cory Sweet and hope he has a speedy recovery and gets back on the ice soon. Scoring for Newcastle Dar- ryle Stere and Roger Yates. Gaining an assist was Troy Foster.
