10 The Canadian Statesman,1 Q nueein Park Usually the, views ex- pressed in this column are of a politicai nature. This week, however, I thought I'd like to turn my attention to the traditions and message of the Christmas season which is now upon us. The anniversary of the birth of Christ is the greatest festival of the year which, throughout historie centuries, has been celebrated in many lands and in many ways. Aithough various countries have im- pressive iegends about the first Christmas tree, it is generaily beiieved that the decorated pine or cedar is of German origin. And when the tree was brought to Nor- th America by German immigrants, the delightful custom was quickly taken up by the New World settiers of ail nationalities. The carol was already popular before the four- teenth century 'and has retained its popularity throughout the suc- ceeding centuries. Over a hundred carols have survived and are now a definite part of most church services heid at Christmas. 0f comparatively recent, origin is the holiday greeting card which was mailed around the middle of the nineteenth century. The early ones were pen- flourishes simulating birds, serolis and flowers with the greeting beautifully written underneath. I think most people don't realize that Santa Clauis is really a native of New York. The Dutch settiers brought him to New Amsterdam as a rather austere person dressed in antique bishop's robes. After New Amsterdam became New York, St. Nicholas became Santa Claus, a rosy-cheeked, plump and jolly old man with reindeer and a sleigh to bring presents to ail good children. This time, his fame quickly spread to the homelands across the ocean where he instan- tly became popular. as the secret deliverer of holiday gifts to young and old. Although these traditions help make the Yuletide season more festive, I would hope that ail of us would find a few moments during this busy season to con- servation Authority will re- ceive an Ontario grant of $26,421 to acquire floodplain property ini the Town of Port Hope. Natural resources Minister James A.C. Auld said that Port Hope has continually faced flooding problems and bas attempted to maintain floodplain-lands as greenbelt areas. To this end, the Authority plans to acquire an additional small property immediately south of the town's park holdings. A commercial building on the property will be remnoved, the site landscaped and then leased back tLo the town. A joint floodplain manage- ment programn is currently under study by the Authority and the Town of Port Hope. Estimated cost of land acquisition is $48,622.
