It was won by lst Bowmanville Scouts for their Captain Hook float. Taking part were, front row, left to right, Danny Hache, Darryl Darby, Ron Lupel, Dave Williams, Trevor NE WTON VILLE Newtonville Women's Insti- tute met at the home of Mrs. Bessie 'Stephenson, Newcas- tle, on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. l2thand President Ber- nice Milligan opened with the Ode, and Mary Stewart Col- lect. Correspondence was read by Secretary-Treas. Jean O'- Neill, including "Thank you notes" fromn the Gilmer and Brown families. Flanelette Sheets or a blan- ket will be purchased for the Clark family, whose home was destroyed by fire. Two Christmas poems were read by Cheryl Vardy, after which guest speaker Linda Caldwell, Home Economist for our area, was introduced. Her topîc was preparing and cooking the Christmas turkey. Some helpful suggestions were given, and a good discussion followed. Two leaflets from Depart- ment of Agriculture were passed out. Amelia Lancaster thanked the speaker, and she was presented with a gift. During the lunch period, a discussion on "Delegates to Toronto Convention" and "O Canada" as a National An- them, brought out many ideas. Attendance was 22 members and 2 visitors.' Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Jones and Mrs. Bea Jones attended the Gideon dinner at Durham College, Tuesday evening. Following the dinner an enjoy- able evening was spent at the home of Mr. and À&4s. Wm. Reimer in Oshawa. Mrs. Lena Clysdale and Mrs. Leone Lane were among the dinner guests, Wednesday at, the home of Mvrs. Kay Kimbaîl, in New- Partridge, Dean Johnson; middle row, John Hache, Tod McRobbie, Kevin Bates, George Stephen, Brad Fraser, Tom Wright, Chris Mertl, Mark Luxton, Shane Luxton; back row, Vincent Bisschop, Ian Andrews, David Johnson, Allen Canrinus, Sandy Wiseman; absent, Dick Andrews, Randy Henning, Kevin Crago and Jim Potter. castie, helping celebrate Mrs. Lena. Graham's birthday. Our best wishes, also. Our United Church Women held their Christmas meeting in the Church Hall, Wednes- day, starting with a pot luck dinner at 6:30 p.m. There were 24 present and after the first course, President Carol Gard- ner took the choir and called on Secretary Jean Kimbaîl for the minutes of the previous meeting, which were read and approved. Treasurer Shirley Stapleton gave the financial report, and the Sunshine Committee gave their ac- counts. Gifts for the shut-ins were discussed and thank you notes read from the Gilmer family and Dorothy Stapleton. Olive Henderson thanked those who made sandwiches for the Clarks and the Satur- day lunch. Marlene Stacey was in- structed to obtain 20 folders for music for the choir. The sum of $100 is to be set aside for the Basement Fund. Marlene Stacey's group pre- sented the program, opening with a Christmas Carol. A Bible readinig was given by Mary Vinkle, followed by readings by Marlene Stacey, Carol Gardner and Helen Elliott. The 4M's Quartette sang "Oh Holy Night", and Mary Vinkle led in prayer. A Christmas Skit was pre- sented by eight ladies. t emphasized "Putting Christ into Christmas". Finally, dessert completed a very enjoyable Christmas party. On Friday, Mrs. Lena Clys- dale, Mrs. Violet Gilmer, Joy Yates, and Shelly, Tompkins were supper guests with Mr. and Mrs. Phil Gilmer and family, on the occasion of daughter Kim's birthday and her parents' Wedding Anni- versary. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Boughen and, Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Caswell were among those attending the Oddfel- lows' Christmas Party in Bowmanville, Thursday even- ing. Pictures of the Holy Land were shown after the supper and a very enjoyable evening was had by all present. Best wishes to the following members of the "Birthday Gang" - Ken Fletcher, Lena Graham, Kim Gilmer, Jack Kimbaîl, Carol Bonnett, Connie Etcher and Stewart Gilmer. Mrs. Leone Lane, with Mr. and Mrs. L. Carroll, were among those attending the Newcastle Post Office Staff diner party on Thursday evening, at "The Flower Pot", Orono. Visitors the past week with Mrs. Agnes Burley included on Tuesday, Mrs. John Murphy, on Thursday,, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Burley, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Smith, Mr. Nelson Sexsmith on Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Keith Burley, Waterloo. The Newcastle Lumber Co. Christmas Party was' held at "The Oasis" on Saturday evening with about 20 in attendance, among them being Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Boughen. The latter were taken by surprise when Wal- lace was called up to receive a lovely picture, a 25 year plaque and an electric table saw in recognition of his years of service. Our Congratula- tions! Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kimball, with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kimbaîl, attended the Christ- mas concert at our local school on Thursday evening. The program included songs by the Junior Choir consisting of some 40 pupils, a play entitled "The Littlest Shep- herd", and a pantomine in which 17 pupils took part. Altogether, it was a very enjoyable Christmas enter- tainment.
